-"Jon," Martin said softly, "if you weren't stabbed, then what happened? It's not as if you just bumped into a door or something." And Jon was sure that if he looked up, he would see Martin standing back a respectful distance. Martin was trying to earn his trust. Martin was trying to find him with his guard down, obscuring his true intent with baby blue jumpers and perfectly brewed tea and-- Jon wouldn't let him. Jon couldn't let him. He couldn't trust Martin, with his curly hair and kind face smattered with freckles, because Martin had been lying to him.

Tav drew in a careful breath. The Weave that always hummed at the edge of her senses felt restless that day, churning inside her like a storm waiting for release. She was aware of it in every inch of her skin, in the slow roll of power at the base of her spine, in the tingling tips of her fingers.
“What about me?” she asked. “I’m magic.”
Gale stared at her, and for the first time since this started, looked genuinely thrown. “Tav, that is not how this works.”
“Are you sure?” Her voice was steady, but her heart had picked up, beating in time with that strange second pulse she could almost sense in him now. “You told me you can draw magic out of objects. That you can feel where it sits and let the orb draw it out. I’m not a scroll, but the power’s there. You can sense magic. Can you sense mine?”

Martin’s heart breaks clean in two when Jon comes home one morning and says he broke his sobriety at an office party and slept with his boss. Splitting up with him is soul-crushing, but it has to be done, Jon knows that Martin’s been cheated on before and he did it anyway. Still, he can’t completely put away the thought that that is so unlike the Jon he knows, and when Daisy approaches him with her perspective on the events of that night, Martin starts to get a very, very bad feeling.
