Summary
Newly flush with cash from the success of Wycaro, Carol and Helen decide to upgrade their wheels. Helen is dead set on haggling them down to a reasonable price.
Wifely banter and a test drive at the Land Rover dealership.
-
“You don’t haggle for a luxury vehicle, Helen. They’ll see right through us.”“O ye of little faith.” She tsk-tsks, “Ten bucks says they throw in a free coffee mug and complimentary tire rotations for life when I’m through with ‘em.”

Summary
Helen needs a cigarette and Carol needs a drink.
Two women stuck in a tin can 30,000 feet in the air, nothing to distract themselves from their respective vices but a shared vice, one that lies just under the thin Wayfarer blanket draped across their laps.
“What are the entrance requirements of the Mile High Club? Will a quick finger-bang get you in or does it need to be in the bathroom to qualify? I just wanna know if we’re gonna have to fold ourselves in half six times like an origami crane.” Carol leans over her armrest, eyebrows waggling in Helen’s direction.

Summary
Carol froze, silently deciding her next move. She could break free now, go indignantly mope in the house for a few hours while Helen got blitzed, or she could listen to the birdbrained woman in their hot tub, who was quite frankly almost always right when it came to matters of her temperament.

Summary
Carol feels touch-starved, her libido kicked into overdrive, so incredibly turned on. She sighs into Zosia’s mouth like this is what she’s been waiting for. 41 days and 40 nights—longer, if she counted the days before they left her—she did better than Jesus.
She likes to think that she held that solitude with some sort of dignity, destructive as it was, before calling them back. Before completely collapsing into Zosia’s arms, that angry, half-baked thought surfacing again: why does she have to be so goddamn warm?
[Missing scene for episode 1x08, after the kiss and before Zosia wakes up on Carol's bed.]

Summary
There was a cardboard box sitting on her office chair when she arrived. A yellow Post-It was stuck to the top, bearing the words “help yourself” in sloppy handwriting that Carol immediately recognized. She knew what she would find inside, but she opened the box anyway. Sure enough—it was a collection of business casual attire, clearly pre-owned but seemingly devoid of holes and stains.
Helen Umstead can go fuck herself, Carol thought.

Summary
Twenty eight year old Carol Sturka is an aspiring author, presently working a temp position at Brooks & Bennet Law Offices in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She's also a self-proclaimed misanthrope, insulted by romance, holding firm in her assertion that to need another person is weakness, and to want them is even worse. So, literally running face first into the most gorgeous woman she's ever seen is maybe the worst case scenario. It's about to be her lucky day.
Helen Umstead is being careful. She understands all too well what it is to have your life feel completely out of your control, and she isn't about to let it happen again. She finally has a real job, with room for forward momentum, and her own apartment. She can manage the subtle chaos of daily life, and she feels stable for the first time ever. So, that restlessness nagging at her from the pit of her stomach, waking her up at all hours of the night, really isn't helpful. The monotony is what's best for her, or at least that's what she tells herself. Getting involved with the whirlwind that is Carol Sturka is a risk. A big one. And she just might have to take it.
TLDR: Baby sturstead desperately tries not to fall in love (three guesses how that turns out)

She holds it out in the space between them, offering it to Helen without a single word.
There it is, the silent request for something comforting, something nurturing. Carol hasn’t ever been able to name this particular desire, but she knows that Helen knows it well.

"Oh, you want me to cuck you with the woman committing identity fraud?" Carol teased, pulling Helen closer.
"That's not cucking," Helen said, as if it mattered, "that'd be if you wanted to have sex with Zosia because I’m a pathetic little worm, and I’m sort of sadly jerking off in the corner."

Summary
She consciously ignores the memory of being introduced to Helen in the lobby a few weeks ago; doesn’t think about how her silver thumb ring had briefly skimmed over Carol’s knuckles when they shook hands. Or the smile that had crept up Helen’s full cheeks while they made small talk about Wycaro.

“I mean, are you just not into me? ‘Cause you can just say it. I’m not that thin-skinned.”
Carol is staring back, totally blank. Her lips have fallen just slightly open — those perky pink lips that press together when she hears something funny, that tug sideways when she’s embarrassed, the lips Helen’s watched sipping glasses of wine for months now and has never been allowed to touch.
