Startled, Crowley’s head shot up, glass of wine halfway to his mouth frozen. Laughter and titterings around the table stopped as all eyes turned to Crowley. Wishing his glasses were still on, his eyes swung to the priest sitting beside him.
Father Aziraphale’s face was brightened by a kind, soft smile as he looked expectantly at Crowley, who swallowed down his surprise and did his best to recover. He put the glass back down.

Summary
After their disastrous meeting in St. James Park in 1862, Crowley flees to America to busy himself with the war, while Aziraphale sits and stews in London. Until, that it is, he receives an assignment to monitor the progress of the new Transatlantic Railroad on the Californian border. He is relieved to find Crowley there already, but the darker side of American expansion threatens to undo everything Aziraphale believes in.
