Summary
Sam is rapt, as he is every time Bilbo sits down to tell them a story. He is a brilliant storyteller, and his adventures twist Sam’s gut up into a litany of knots without fail. There is something about them. The strangeness…the danger…the queerness. It feels like an extra two seed cakes at elevenses. It feels like the odd, special, private knowledge that Thorin Oakenshield is alive, and that his beard is not long enough to tuck into his belt, like the stories say.

Summary
For a moment, Thorin looks winded, his eyes wide and his jaw set tightly like Bilbo has wrung him out to dry. He seems out of his depth—it’s written all over his face, really—and Bilbo would be moved to sympathy if he didn’t know that somehow, this warranted Thorin seeking him out in the middle of the night. He remains guarded for both of their sakes.
“I have never courted anyone before, and I was not educated in the art before the dragon came.”
“Alright.”
“If I remember correctly, you have been- involved, with other hobbits before.”
“... I have.”
“Please teach me how to kiss.”

Summary
Life after war has much more politics than Gimli thought, and much less Legolas than he would like, but the latter he knows (or believes) he has to get used to. Or: Legolas leaps, occasionally stumbling, into a new age, while Gimli can't see the wood for the (green)leaf.
"How do your people court then?"
The question was not as abrupt as it would seem, firstly because the news that his brother was courting had clearly left Legolas in deep thought for a number of days, secondly because Legolas had long ago confessed his curiosity about the lives and customs of Gimli's kin, and thirdly because Legolas' grace was well-known to be in his light feet and not his manners.
However, Gimli saw no reason to let him have his own way entirely. "And by my people do you mean the Longbeards, or the Dwarves of Erebor, or the wandering mender that I now seem to be?"
"I meant," Legolas said, "wandering jesters."

Summary
Always, Sam is worrying that he cares too much. Always, Sam knows that he cares too much. But he doesn’t know how to treat Mister Frodo how he would treat any other master he wasn’t in love with because he has no other master and he simply is in love with Frodo. So, he is stuck forever-wondering if his seams show. If there is straw poking out. If the crows fear him, or are only pretending. “My dear Sam,” Frodo sighs, thumbing back and forth over the hewn pattern in his mug. It is a large earthenware alehorn Thorin made, and there are dwarfish runes carved into the sides. Sam has loved this mug since he was a child, and would trace the shapes with the tip of his fingers, wondering what mysterious things the runes held inside, what they meant. If they were love poems to Bilbo, which he chose to believe, at first because it felt scandalous, and later, because it gave him hope. If he has the option to choose the mug he brews tea for Frodo in, he still chooses this one. “You take such very good care of me,” Frodo murmurs.
“Well, yes, sir,” Sam says, blushing. It is my job.”
