He could picture the news headings now: “War Hero and Former Congressman James Barnes Killed on Mission with Disgraced Former Captain America.” They would conveniently leave out the fact that John was also a war hero. But who cared? He’d be the villain in the narrative, as was customary. John had gotten used to it.
(He hadn’t.)
They weren’t going to die, and Bucky didn’t need to know he was injured.

Or: The Thunderbolts* are forced to leave John and Bucky behind temporarily on a mission, and the two have to rely on each other if they want to get back to the Watchtower alive. Though it would have been helpful if John had told Bucky he was injured.

“JOHN!” she screamed. Ava was hardly aware of the two other men in the room as she lurched forward. Her body was flickering, pain shooting through her limbs as her mind disconnected from her abilities. All she knew was she needed to move.

“Sam, like Sam Wilson? Like, actual Captain America?” Bob asked excitedly, nearly choking on his coffee. He grimaced apologetically after John rolled his eyes at his comment. “Sorry, Walker.”

Summary
It started with something Karen said to her in the kitchen.
Well, not really. It actually started a few weeks beforehand, when Joyce first confided in Hopper that she thought Jonathan was acting strangely. They were in the tunnels, testing the network out against the map of Hawkins they’d spent the past month and a half drafting. Hop came to a full stop. When he turned to meet her gaze, he looked almost amused. “Well yeah,” he said, fond in the way that meant he was humoring her, “All that pot he’s been smoking will do that to a kid. I gotta say Joyce, I'm a little surprised you let him—"
But Joyce didn't hear the rest of the sentence. Pot? The word seemed to land with a clunk on the floor of the tunnel, where it sat heavily between them, impossible to ignore.
Now that the Byers are back in Hawkins, Joyce has started slowly putting the pieces together about her firstborn. On the eve of the end of the world, she wants to talk to her son about college.
Or, Jonathan and Joyce have a long overdue conversation.

Summary
Caught in a storm of various too big feelings with no direct access to his preferred targets, he accuses Jonathan of not caring anymore. Jonathan looks down at the glass he’s holding, water swishing and swirling inside, and says quietly, “You’re the reason I’m still here.”
“Like, you feel stuck in Hawkins because of me? If that’s the case, then you—”
“No, Will.” His eyes dart up. “You’re the reason I’m still here.”

Their trek to Hawkins Lab starts alright. But after about ten minutes of a—frankly suspicious—lack of Demogorgon sightings, Steve starts not-so-subtly suggesting they pick up the pace, which Jonathan, evidently, takes as a personal attack, so the next thing Nancy knows, the two of them are trying so hard to outpace each other that they end up yards ahead of her and Dustin.
"How do you even put up with them?" Dustin asks, watching Steve and Jonathan from afar with a wrinkled nose.
"Practice," Nancy mutters.
Or: two conversations between Nancy and Dustin and Jonathan and Steve in the Upside Down.
