She's seen the scars on Emily's body, touched them and kissed them and reassured her wife countless times that she's beautiful - scars and all - so they shouldn't bother her now.

The car ride home is quiet. JJ has the windows down and the soft summer air sits heavily between them. Emily feels grimy from leftover sweat and kicked-up dirt. She’s tired. Jennifer drives blindly, she’s driven back from the airport enough times that it’s practically muscle memory. Emily is painfully quiet, staring vacuously out the window at the passing street signs, the glimmers of neon lights dance across her unfocused vision. She's come to expect this from Emily. Keeping the pain quiet, locking herself up in her head instead of saying anything. Jennifer has no room to judge.

“Emily...” JJ’s tone came out sympathetic as she found herself meeting the hard gaze of her soon to be ex-colleague on her doorstep, still donned in her charcoal suit and black peacoat. Her straight, dark locks scattered wildly behind her from a punishing gust of wind, and she reluctantly let out a small shiver, as if too stubborn to give in to the cold’s demands. If it had been any other day, JJ might have even smiled at the sight.

Emily pulled her phone out and let her thumb hover over JJ’s contact. With a shake of her head, she scrolled down and pressed a different contact. Emily held the phone to her ear, closing her eyes briefly to keep her control in place.
“Hey, Princess. You couldn’t-”
“Morgan.” She cut him off aggressively. “Did you drive to Baltimore? Or JJ?”
“I did. What’s going on?”
“Don’t give JJ the keys. I need you to hand her the phone.” When he was about to protest again, she added a firm “please”.
“Yeah, yeah. She’s right here.”
Emily heard the crackling of the phone switching hands and then JJ spoke into the phone cautiously. “Em, what’s wrong?”
Emily took another small breath and tried to keep her voice as calm as possible. “There was a shooting at Henry’s school. I don’t really have any information, it seemed to have just happened, but Hotch and I are on the way.” Emily powered through as JJ started sputtering. Emily could already hear her starting to hyperventilate. “Jennifer, I promise you, I will get him out of there.”Bookmarked by sof (othernightsx)

Still lost in her thoughts as she handed the driver a twenty, she didn’t notice the blonde perched on her apartment steps until she was only a few feet away. Emily felt herself smile, the action feeling somewhat foreign after the events of the past few days. JJ sat up, gently brushing away the light dusting of snow that covered her from head to toe. Burying her hands into her black trench, she held a knowing smirk, waiting for Emily to voice her first protest.
