Mez'iraejss has spent six months finding a name no text thought worth recording: Grexivane, courtier of Azzagrat's forty-sixth layer, small enough to have escaped every cataloguing hand before hers. She raises the circle and conducts the interrogation herself. She survives it by whatever margin the evening's arithmetic sees fit to allow, goes to her knees on the vault floor in the dark, and then opens her notes each morning for six days without summoning Athux.
On the sixth day, she draws his circle. He arrives already in possession of what she did not tell him, and the conversation that follows is conducted entirely across the boundary of her seal: two creatures who have spent years becoming fluent in each other, arriving at the one exchange neither of them has prepared adequate defences for. He is furious that she nearly ceased to exist in a room he was not in. She has found his fury, and his threats of correction, rather more to her preference than she intends him to discover.

He arrives expecting what two years of solitary study generally produces: a girl grown more confident in her ignorance, armed with questions shaped by the limits of what texts alone can teach. What he finds is a circle better than the one that held him before, a notebook dense with two years of refinement, and a seventeen-year-old who has been subjecting lesser tanar'ri to interrogation by torment. Before the third question is finished, he discovers that something which has kept its silence in him since the last war worth the name has roused itself, and that the girl on the other side of her circle, with her notebook and her veil and her careful, patient accounting of everything he is, is going to be a great deal more trouble than he had thought to prepare for.
