Things had gotten bad. So much for everything Molokov had told him, Walter thought. The blockade had been implemented, sure, which seemed to be the most nonviolent course of action that Kennedy could have taken, but that wasn’t going to solve everything. Especially not when everything was at DEFCON 2, and the president was still authorizing missiles to be loaded onto ships to perform the first air strikes on the Soviet Union, just in case. The blockade was working, according to McCone, and Stevenson had gotten them a press win with the shit he had pulled at the UN, but that hadn’t made anyone less worried. Walter had been at work since six that morning and hadn’t left even at eight that night. He was going to plan on sleeping at his desk, just to feel useful, but Molokov called him from his home phone, announcing that he had already made it to Walter’s apartment and expected to see him at home. Apparently, Alexander had ‘things to discuss.’

Summary
When the time of the reception eventually arrived, Walter was in luck. There was Molokov, looking impeccably well-groomed, surrounded by the dancers and diplomats who had accompanied him on the trip over. His wife was in the room also, not being overtly affectionate, but she had fixed his collar for him, casually, earlier in the evening. Walter wasn’t jealous of her; he was perfectly aware of the arrangement between her and Alexander, but he wished that he could have that same kind of closeness with Molokov.

Summary
