Summary
There was a wide-eyed gaze of amazement and wonder in Neteyam's big eyes, big like his mother's, as he tried to catch the bubbles. Jake couldn't help his soft chuckle at the disgruntled little blink and nose scrunch Neteyam would do whenever the bubbles popped on his fingers.
A sweet beaming smile framed his chubby little face, bunny teeth on display. He squeaked happily every time the pilot blew more bubbles, perfectly content to play on his own.
And in that moment, Jake couldn't help being reminded of his mate. When they'd first met, she was all adorable and feisty— scary, yes, but in a way he couldn't help being mesmerized by. He remembered her pretty face lighting up as the atokirina floated around them in the forest. Her awed giggles as she'd hopped and tried to catch one was a precious sound he held near.
Neteyam looked exactly like her, standing barely ten feet away from him, and Jake somehow felt like he was falling in love all over again.

A few years later, it shocked the metkayina boy greatly when the first thought he had, as he looked into a stern pair of eyes, was of how breathtaking the shade of gold that he could find there, along with the fire softly crackling behind them.
All he could think about was how he was an idiot.
An idiot for not asking his father what he should do if he ever found someone that he was willing to burn for.

Summary
Despite his palpable affections for the omatikayan, Aonung never dared to say anything about it. Unlike Tsireya and Loak, who pretty much were already seen as a pair by the entire village.
Aonung didn't want to get too attached. Just in case the Sullys suddenly decided it was time for them to return to the forest.
So, quite idiotically, the metkayina settled on being a friend Neteyam could lean on.
He thought it was enough - until he realised it wasn't.
It took Neteyam surviving a gunshot and miraculously surviving death itself for him to realise that it wasn't enough.
Aonung could've lost him, and the thought was convincing enough for him to get a grip.
Get a grip, and maybe, possibly, say something about the affection he felt for the other the entire time, and how he had been disguising it as being 'a good friend'.
Except he had no clue on how to go about it.
or Aonung is bad at expressing himself with words - and even worse with poems. Neteyam is (endearingly) confused.
alternatively: Aonung is pathetically down bad, and everyone except Neteyam can see it.

Neteyam settled to say, starting to feel a little bashful from the many times the other seemed to have shown interest in his life. (In him. It felt odd, considering how the people around him usually only ever ask about Toruk Makto and how it felt like to be the warrior's son.)
Purposely, before Aonung could say a word, the omatikayan added, "Plus, why do you still insist on getting me to talk anyway?" Then, just because, he added jokingly, "Do you like me or something?"
Rather than reacting to the joke, Aonung replied to the omatikayan's other questions. "Like I said; no way you don't have stories to tell.
You came to our shores wearing your cummerbund. That garment alone tells a lot."
"Like what?"
"Like how you look as young as your younger brother, but already act so…" he paused, thoughtful, "…mature."
"I don't look that mature."
"Forest boy. I'm also 15 - yet I still act like a child."
