Summary
Red hair and blue eyes like the spawn of devil himself, Neil Josten appears one spring as the adopted brother of Kevin Day and son of David Wymack.
His scarred and watchful self slips into the orbit of those in South Carolina with the quiet persistence of something inevitable; uninvited and unexpected, with a haunted, secret-riddled past trailing him like shadows.
Andrew isn't impressed.
But then, one night, he finds himself lying with Neil on the roof of Wymack's house. His pulse thunders beneath his skin, and Neil raises his palm up to the endless sky above them to say,
"I wish I could just capture it all. Hold it. Keep it. There's so much I know because there's so much that's happened, and I wish I could replace it with the world, because none of those things even matter. It's not the world that's cruel; it's the people in it."
And something shifts, subtle and sudden, like gravity realigning. Andrew feels it in his chest before he’s ready to name it.

Summary
Neil never really cared about how his scars made him look, for how they littered every inch of his skin. The Foxes had never given him any reason to. They were just there—like cause and effect of his life spent fighting, showing his will to not just survive, but live.
So why couldn't his mind break free from the endless circle of memories it was trapped in, and give in to the clutches of sleep? Why did he find himself in a basement miles away, a car speeding down a road, just because of one bad dream?
It was okay though. Andrew was next to him, and only a few words from him were needed to clear his treacherous mind, no matter how crypt or clipped.

Summary

The answer is, Neil's running to Andrew. Past and present. His future's coming fast, and this weird, turbulent year will come to an end, and then they have to adjust to whatever their new lives are.
A week before professional offers are given, Neil flies out to one of Andrew's games.

Kevin hesitates for a fraction of a second. "No one to Neil, as far as I know," and there's something in his voice that makes Andrew narrow his eyes. "He had… history with Jean."
That word snaps down his spine like a rubber band. He's heard that kind of avoidance before. It rings like misunderstanding in his head. He bites his cheek until he tastes blood. The sharp copper is both grounding and nauseating. Drake left him with blood in his mouth more than once, but so have a lot of fights. He turns to the memory of his fists hitting flesh for solace.
"Did you know?" Knox asks, like he has any idea of what he's talking about. Maybe he does, because he sounds a little like Neil does, when he talks around Proust and Drake. Like it's wounding him too, even if it didn't happen to him.
"Not here," Kevin says, and Andrew doesn't miss the glance back at him.
