"The dolls. How do they work? You said you would show me." He creeps to the edge of the workbench and leans on it with folded elbows, intently peering into the lens. Beneath it, through it, like a window into another place altogether, the clock gears are like glistening, bronze wagon wheels, huge and sharp and shining between the fingers gently coaxing the mechanism back together.
"Jon."
"Yes?"
"You're blocking the light."

Jon's godfather makes the finest clockwork dolls he's ever seen. Or are they something more?

There is a town on the bank of the river Mnemosyne - fertile, beautiful, happy.
There is a truth in the river - dark, fearful, alone.

Summary
Jon's desire to ask about the key has been sitting at the forefront of his thoughts like a neon sign, and any entertainment Elias might have been getting from his behaviour is dwindling. Every slammed cupboard inches him closer to remembering what a real, human headache feels like. Supper isn't even done cooking before he decides that not only is he going to indulge more of Jon's fantasies from the other night, but he's probably going to find himself meaning it, when he does. And if Jon doesn't just ask what he wants to ask, after that, Elias may just have to pry it out of him.
There's something Jon needs to ask Elias. In which Jon is a brat, Elias is fed up, one of Jon's fantasies comes true, and a canon conversation takes place at a... surprising time. | For Elias Week 2022 Day 1, "Favourite Canon Scene".

Jon is nothing if not dedicated to proving himself, to doing right.

"You're right, as usual," Jon replies, tugging down the zip on Elias's fly and palming over him before he swallows a mouthful of nerves and leans in to kiss the front of the other's trousers. It occurs to him that he doesn't know how much he's supposed to touch, or when - how much eagerness is too much, and how much is right. "You can always change your mind."

Summary
Jon tries to be good. When he wanders, it isn't for long. When he questions, it isn't with any malice. He tries to be respectful, to understand what his grandmother needs from him, but it's difficult. It's difficult, because Jon dreams of more. He dreams of the bees and he dreams of his eighteenth birthday, when this will all be over.
You see, Jon whispers to the bees in his dreams as he sits haloed by blue in a barrow of hydrangeas, I’m going away from here.
Where are you going? ask the bees in their buzzing voices and Jon sighs, laying back in the leaves. To another world, he says, where I will marry a faerie prince.
***
It ought to be frightening, being betrothed to a stranger from another world. Jon is too curious to be scared - this escape from the drudgery of real life is all he's ever wanted. But of course, on his wedding day, nothing is quite as he expected.

Carrying on his grandmother's legacy is a price too high for Jon to pay. He thinks so, anyway, until he's offered a way out.

Summary
Aren't you curious?
Jon is, about so much more than just the artefacts in their unmarked, yellow-white wooden boxes. He's curious about Gertrude. He's curious about Elias selecting him to take her place. He's curious about that hand and the teasing lilt in the man's voice when he asked the question. It wasn't wholly professional. At least, that's what Jon would think, if he didn't know better. Either of those things, the touch and the tone, could have been nothing noteworthy, on their own. Combined, yes, those are the things that make Jon curious.
