He doesn't understand the look on Makoto's face when he tells him he has a paper to write. One week later, the pool is bright and blue with promise. Haruka can see it glistening from the rooftop, in the corner edge of the windows of his Philosophy class.

“Hey, Haru?”
Rin stops, ducking his head to catch Haruka’s eye. The wind blows through his hair, sending a few red strands spilling in front of his face, and Haruka has to bite back the urge to reach out and tuck them back in place.
“I hate to ask, but… Well, you still haven’t… You haven’t found the other side of my string yet, have you?”
Haruka’s eyes dart down towards Rin’s finger, his heart squeezing as he follows the meter of thread until it fades out into nothingness, unlike every other string he's ever seen.
He closes his eyes, unwilling to watch Rin’s face fall as he shakes his head. “No,” he chokes out, his voice distant even to his own ears. He wishes that he could say yes, and yet a selfish, horrible part of him is secretly glad that Rin’s string hasn’t fully appeared yet.
“And yours…?” Rin prompts, his voice light and strained as he nods towards Haruka’s hand.
“No,” Haruka says again, with less guilt.
Rin looks down at Haruka’s hand again thoughtfully, his sharp teeth biting into his bottom lip for a second.
“Then I guess we’ll just have to keep looking together, huh?” he decides at last.(Haruka can see everyone's red string of fate. Everyone's but his own.)

Summary
The first of the postcards arrives exactly on week after Rin leaves.
Haruka’s hands shake as he picks up the little rectangle of cardstock, tracing the image of a kangaroo and its baby before flipping it over to read the inscription. Before his eyes even land on the familiar, loopy handwriting, he knows that it’s from Rin. Knows because of the boldly written Greetings from Australia! on the front of the card. Knows because out of all of the places Rin had wanted to travel to, Haruka knows that going back to Australia was on the top of his list.
Knows because when Rin had left on his months-long travel trip, when he’d kissed Haruka goodbye at the airport, he’d promised to write.
(Five times Rin sends Haruka postcards, and one time he gives them to him instead.)

Haru hadn’t found the need to belt out at the top of his lungs since then. Nothing remotely close to the decibel of loudness his voice had reached on that afternoon. And as Rin zones out halfway through folding laundry, unmoving and hovering next to his bed, he can’t help but wonder if he’d get the chance to witness that raw, untamed side of Haru ever again.

Haru's side-job watching over the town's lighthouse has its disadvantages -- like having to clean up after the teenagers who break in to drink -- or the pesky seagull who can't determine whether it's daytime or nighttime -- or, most troublingly, the feeling of being watched by something from the sea as he works.
He's only heard about the half shark/half man creatures that lurk by the water's edge from legend. But when a boy washes up onto shore one night, angry and refusing to speak, Haru realizes that he's about to get more up close and personal with the legend than ever.
