Summary
He pinched the leather of the middle finger, feeling it rub against itself, against his metal. A low flame, one that had been simmering since Maxwell had asked him to help spot him in the gym hours ago, started to boil. He shouldn’t. He really shouldn’t.
But.

"Yes, well," he says, maybe a touch defiantly. He can double down with the best of them. "It's not a crime for a man to have proclivities, last time I checked. I think it's an extremely natural reaction to the sight of something—evocative."
"And what exactly is it evoking," says Torse, in a low voice that, god, Maxwell hopes only sounds that suggestive in his own head rather than aloud to the listening ears of Oda at large.

Summary
Maxwell had always had trouble making friends. If this was his chance to find someone who really understood him, he didn’t want to run away from it.
Or, some people are lucky enough to be marked with the name of their soulmate. Maxwell would be a lot happier about this if he could actually read the language his soulmate's name was written in.

Cringey childhood anecdotes? Smalltalk, Maxwell, is this it, is this the vibe? Is this the normal thing to do, when you're picking apart a piece of the man you fell asleep on top of just a few hours ago, when he is groping along the floor to find where he's dropped the new one and pressing it into your palm, preparing to tell you how to put him back together again?

Summary
They are closer than they have ever been to finding Comfrey McLeod.
The Ectic Research is abandoned by the time they arrive, but only very recently. The footprints are still fresh, the documents strewn carelessly about, the booby traps still untriggered. Comfrey and Mordecestershire are chasing each other, or perhaps both chasing the same thing separately, with the crew of the Zephyr always a beat behind. Their next destination will take them to the bottom of the sea, and for that they need a submersible.
Fortunately, they know exactly where to get one. Unfortunately, it is all the way in Oda.
“Two weeks!?” Maxwell exclaims.
“Two weeks,” Van replies. “Marya just triple checked the math.”
Maxwell feels a blood vessel about to burst on the inside of his skull. A two week pause after five days of nonstop chase makes Maxwell want to pitch himself off the side of the Zephyr. His hands twitch under his gloves.

It would have been a lot easier, probably, if they could have fallen in love while Torse was still here. But count on them to do things the hard way, of course.

No one had ever accused Maxwell Gotch of having particularly good luck. On the contrary, in fact.
Case in point; Olethra was out exploring Zumhara and flirting with Ludmila, while Maxwell was down for the count in his quarters.
Just his luck.

Summary
For the first time in his life, Maxwell didn’t feel as though he were missing something. Everything slotted into place and felt just as it should be, like there was nothing more he could ask for than to live this life. He never wanted to leave Torse’s side, for as long as he was able.
He never understood why a ring seemed to change the nature of a relationship, but feeling the weight of super gold over his knuckles made him start to reconsider its absurdity.

Summary
Torse contemplates beauty, stillness, and how the act of holding something like it is precious makes it so.
-----------
He knows he was not meant for marvels such as these, and he cannot risk endangering this cradle of new life and ever-spinning cycles for the sake of clutching it in clawed, clumsy, indelicate fists. It is not his place, and so he will hold vigil at the edges with Little One and watch how his companions sparkle in joy. Near their company, at least, his unbelonging barely hurts. It’s strange that Maxwell doesn’t move from his side. Instead he lowers himself onto harsh rock and tucks his chin onto one knee. Torse doesn’t quite understand what makes Max stay, when his friend must surely be enticed into exploration by the scenery, until he follows Maxwell’s gaze.
Max is looking up, beyond the bioluminescence and into cloudless night, eyes darting around until they steady, dilating, and his intent expression melts into awe. Like he was searching for and finally found… Oh.
Torse hadn’t realized they were so far vex.

Summary
You stare out at the setting Zoodian sun, away from the rest of the crew, relishing the quiet. A voice sounds, “Maxwell.” It’s Torse, coming up behind you, steps loud. You turn to face him - you always turn to face him, turn back and look and see him, behind you, beside you, orbiting each other like the two halves of a binary star.
“Torse,” you say, heart somehow in your throat. You can feel every time he has touched you, phantom on your skin, his body across your shoulders, his hand on your back, his heart, bandaged tight to your knuckles. You’d taken it off after the fight. It’s in your pocket, now, warm and beautiful and his, more important than any other fact of its creation. It’s his. It’s yours, too, but it’s his. You run a thumb across one of the jagged edges.
Neither of you speak, for a moment. You look at him, instead, take in every detail of him, the scratches that want buffing out, the charred marks, the spots of Longspot’s blood, dusting every inch of him. His gaze, red and warm and direct at you, always at you, in every situation. His voice in your ears, ringing, my companion. My friend. The one I break bread with. The one seated at all of my tables.

Summary
You are falling. You do not expect to make it out of this - you do not deserve to make it out of this, you've ruined everything, you wretch, you ruin, you warmonger.
But there is something you must say, as you see Maxwell Gotch barrel towards you, an avenging angel, wingsuit spread, breaching the gap between worlds to chase you. You do not deserve his care. You do not deserve him. You are going to fall to your death, and you cannot make yourself into someone who is good enough for him, not with this heart, so easily overtaken.
“I always considered you a friend, Maxwell,” you say. You have to say it, say something, use your last words to try and convey an iota of how deep your affections for him lie. He may have been your first real friend, the closest thing to your gold-metal heart. You are going to die, here, in the space between worlds, and he will at least have known that you cared.
Talons come around you. Straka. Everything goes black, and the last of the Aganti Zernai is gone.

Summary
Torse reached out and gently pulled Max’s hand closer to examine it. Beyond the bruises, he could certainly feel a more serious ligament tear in the pointer and middle fingers. For the wound to heal swiftly, he would need to allow the fingers to rest and put little strain on them.
“This is a tear. You shouldn’t push yourself, Maxwell. Let them heal instead of straining them more,” Torse said, looking back up to Max’s face. He sighed and gave a begrudging nod, turning to grab a towel to wipe off the remaining shaving cream. “If you would still like to shave, I could help you,” he offered.

Summary
“Sometimes when I feel out of place, I’ll spar. It helps distract me,” Max said, gently flexing his fingers beneath his leather gloves.
“As an automaton, I’m afraid I have no ability to improve my physical capabilities through movement or practice,” Torse responded, glancing to the side in a small tell of shyness.
“Spar with me anyways,” Max blurted out, standing quickly.
