Summary
A courtesy visit to a crime scene reconnects Bucky with an old colleague who leaves him with a responsibility neither he or Sam are sure they're up to. But with few other options in a world that's had its already weak social safety nets slashed to pieces by the doubling population, they set out to create a refuge - and maybe even a home - even as betrayal lurks in the wings.

(Rape/Non-con and Underage tags both refer to the comics-canon survival sex work undertaken by Laura Kinney while in hiding in New York, which I've adapted to fit into the MCU. It ends directly before the start of the fic and is obviously referred to repeatedly but never described or detailed, nor is it the primary focus of the plot.)

“Okay, uh huh,” Sam says, and now his voice is strained. “Just warning you I'm probably gonna be loud, this is-- yeah, this is real intense.”
“Bad intense?”
“No, man, what the hell, I'd tell you to take it out if it was.” He lifts his head just enough to shoot Bucky one of those ‘where the fuck did you come from, were you raised by wolves?’ looks that he's really good at.

It's a little overwhelming, like something he's been carrying around that's been dormant and dying and only now that he's gotten close to the sunlight has it started to grow until it's big enough to threaten to tear its way out of him entirely. It's just obvious that he'd want Sam, sometimes it's like he's surprised all the plants don't grow leaning in his direction. He's not so sure about the rest of the equation.

“Are you done yet?” Bucky asked, mostly to egg Sam on rather than to actually know.
Of course, his teasing worked–as Sam was lunging back towards him in a matter of seconds. This time, instead of raising his hands up to protect himself, Bucky lowered them down to Sam’s hips–grabbing at them to keep the man close to his chest.
Sam immediately fell into the touch, bringing his hands up to tangle in Bucky’s long hair and slamming their lips together–the force of it so violent that it caused Bucky’s injured lip to split open once again, blood spilling out of it and mixing with spit throughout both of their mouths.
