    “Steve told me you were quite the ladies’ man back in the day.”

    “Back in the day?” said Bucky, huffing a small laugh. “You mean 1943?”

    “Sure. Told me about all the double dates you’d set up for them. He said half the time he was just an excuse so that you could take out two girls.”

    “Steve said that? Geeze.” Bucky shook his head. “So ungrateful. Kid was like the hardest person to set up with a date.”

    “‘Cause of the skinny thing?”

    “No, the moral righteousness thing,” Bucky nodded at Sam. “Maybe you know something about that.”

    How Sam figures out that Bucky’s probably into him, which is a problem because Sam loves Bucky but it’s not like he’s IN love with Bucky, right? A remix on the last half of episode 6, Rated T for Tender Kisses.

    “Just check in on him?” Steve asked. “Try to get him to spend some time out of his apartment? When he first came back, he wouldn’t talk to anyone, Wouldn’t go anywhere. He’s better now, but I’m afraid without me around—”

    “He’ll start to backslide.” Sam was already nodding; he was more than aware of how important a solid support system was. “Sure, I’ll check in on him.” Steve broke into a grin, and Sam continued, “But if he tells me to fuck off—”

    “He won’t.” Steve’s smile drooped as he considered his words. “Well,” he said, his grin reappearing, “he won’t mean it.”

    Sam is a therapist in DC, going through the motions as he works through the grief of his partner’s death. Bucky just moved to DC for a new prosthetics program, trying to piece his life back together after a traumatic experience being HYDRA’s prisoner. Maybe these two, along with a few furry, feathered friends, can help each other heal.

    “I feel like literally, actually saving the world has given you unrealistic expectations. Most folks don’t need you to save the entire world on the regular, Sam," said Sarah.

    “I hear you,” said Sam, rueful. He sighed and tipped his head back, pressing the heels of his hands against his eyes. “But I still kind of feel like I have to save the entire world, if I’m carrying this shield.”

    “Sam,” said Bucky, and Sam lowered his hands and opened his eyes to look at him, only to find himself the subject of Bucky’s staring problem yet again. “Let’s just go out there. See who we can help, how."

    Taking on the Captain America mantle is all well and good, but unfortunately, it quickly becomes pretty obvious to Sam that carrying the shield doesn't guarantee a paying gig as a superhero—at least, not any kind of job that fits with the kind of Cap Sam wants to be. But when it comes down to it, all Sam wants to do is use the shield to help people, so paying gig or not, he and Bucky set out on the road to do just that, and to figure out what kind of superheroes they want to be. Slowly but surely, they figure out just what kind of partners they want to be too. (Hint: it is not 'just a couple of guys.')
