Life has much more to throw at him that weird monsters and life threatening scenarios- there's also a pesky blue annoyance. -

Summary
He sighed and brought a paw down to blue quills, slowly grooming the knots and tangles out of them. Sonic complied and laid his head down more, allowing better access for them to get cleaned. The voices around him laughed and whispered about the rest of their daily plans. And dare Shadow mention that it was...
It was perfect.
The chattering around them slowly came to a stop and Shadow raised his head. He was greeted with the odd smiles of his teammates and a blue hedgehog letting out a small murr in his lap.
“Soooo,” Amy started, “Shadow! Sonic, do you have anything you’d like to tell us?”
The two hedgehogs turned to each other, raising a brow before turning back to Amy. Shadow just shrugged before returning to messy blue quills
“No?” Sonic said. A small grin sat on his face, “I mean there was this one time I-“
Shadow snorted, looking at his teammates' twitching eyes and awkward smiles. He finished the last knot and reached around, squeezing a glove-covered paw. The purr in Sonics chest only got louder
Yeeep. He sighed, This was perfect.

Three weeks have passed since Sonic and Shadow's adventure through Shatterspace, the former beginning to readjust to his regular life and putting the whole thing behind him. Sonic is so caught up in his thoughts he doesn’t react to the hand grabbing his muzzle— gently too— with said alien hedgehog inspecting him with childish curiosity. It’s not a gentility he was expecting in such sharp talons, not to mention from someone who basically amounts to an enemy.

Sonic Movie 3 Spoilers!
Sonic is struck with grief in the wake of Shadow's sacrifice. Shadow, in his truest form—his pain, his honor, the good in his heart—is Sonic's little secret. The world isn't ready. Nobody would understand, not even his own family. Sonic is more than ready to shoulder the burden.
But Shadow's not dead.
It doesn't take long for he and Sonic to fall into their awkward little tango. Midnights spent sneaking into the Wachowski household lends well to forming a strong, indestructible bond, and it's only natural that, over the course of it all, two hedgehogs fall in love.
Title comes from the song Hunter by Paris Paloma, which played at the theater before my second viewing of Sonic 3, and now is a song I associate wholly with sonadow. Haha, whoops!

Shadow hissed in pain. The laser had just grazed him, but it still stung, and he instinctively gripped the wound it left on his arm. “You dare-”
He stopped. The laser hadn’t hit him. In fact, it had struck Sonic, right on his lower left arm.
So why did his forearm feel like it just got shot?
He whipped around, fear climbing up his throat, and he suddenly became hyper-aware of something new. It was like a sixth sense, feeling the confusion that emitted from Sonic’s fur in waves as if it was his own.
“What did you do?!” Shadow snarled.

Summary
Shadow looks at Sonic like he’s the sun, with blazing anger and contempt, and yet he complains in his absence. He looks most intently when Sonic leaves, and behind his eyes Tails can almost see the rumination with which one looks at a sunset, almost as if he’s wondering how he’d never seen someone like this before.
Sonic looks at Shadow as if he’s the moon, cresting and waning in his light and vulnerability, soft, hidden adoration behind narrowed eyes. A thousand stars shine around him but he gazes just at Shadow, commenting fleetingly on small craters or how the light shines on his face.
If that isn’t love, albeit buried under contempt, Tails doesn’t know what is.
(or, five times that someone notices that Sonic and Shadow are in love and one time they do something about it)
