Mydei lowers his eyes, taking in the blood dripping from the alpha's fingers. When he lifts them back up, Phainon blinks, and throws him a lopsided smile that doesn't reach the eyes, as if the man hasn't done it in a very long time.
Oh.
He recalls the times the alpha called him with that same exact tone, finally noticing the difference. Phainon's eyes darken the second the realization dawns on him, like a predator prancing in front of his prey.
His instincts scream at him to flee, but the other side of his mind finds it challenging, entertaining, and he wants.

Castorice rolls her eyes. “As if plating isn’t just sculpture with food.”
He opens his mouth to fire back a snide rejoinder, realizes she’s right, and holds his tongue instead. She’s doing him a favor, forcing him out of his house, one of his only friends who’s stuck with him over the past year of tremendous, never-ending grief. No one knows how to deal with a widower’s pain and loss. No one wants to. But Castorice has faced even more death than he has, and she hasn’t let him pull away from the world despite his attempts.
After the unexpected death of his partner, Khaslana, about a year ago, Mydei meets photographer Phainon at a gallery exhibition he's forced to attend by his friend, Castorice. Unexpected sparks fly between them as they grow closer through Phainon's photography.

Summary
Like any respectable Dragonlord, Ajaw’s contract with Kinich was written to clearly favor himself. This meant in its endless pages of legal jargon, it hid a loophole: Ajaw needed a body, and it would come from Kinich. Only an ignoramus would assume this meant Ajaw would claim Kinich’s body after he died (no matter how much he might have implied that).
After all, why should Ajaw wait until Kinich dies if he’s the best part about living? Truly, K’uhul Ajaw is the wisest and most powerful of all Dragonlords, a shining beacon of virtue amidst the filth of Natlan’s dullards who should all endeavor to prostrate themselves before his superior cunning and intellect, etc., etc.
Of course, the real process for receiving a body involves Ajaw becoming a master tattoo artist. Oh, and fucking Kinich within an inch of his life, because Ajaw.

Summary
They’re deep in the ever night beyond Okhema when Mydei notices the subtle change in Phainon’s scent. Phainon has always smelled pleasant enough, aside from the disgusting musk that comes with him being another alpha, but now that musk is more pungent and the other notes more subdued.
“Deliverer,” Mydei says. Growls, really. He’s already annoyed. Phainon should’ve done this math before they left, and now they’re both about to be horribly inconvenienced. “Why are you going into rut?”
When Phainon's ruined suppressants cause him to go into rut unexpectedly, Mydei helps him through it.
