"So," Henry says as Alex's brain makes a valiant effort to reboot because he's staring at Henry fucking Fox, the man he has spent the better part of a decade staring at through a small author's photo. It doesn't even begin to do him justice and he's only now fully realising it, "your daughter is a fan of my work?"
"Huge," Alex chokes out, struggling to not make a fool out of himself. "Dragged me here."
Henry raises an eyebrow, face utterly amused as he says, "Really? Because I could have sworn I just heard her tell Issa that her 'lame dad' forced her to come here."
"Huh,”Alex says, "Kids, am I right?"
Alex's daughter is growing up, a fact he is entirely not okay with.
She's becoming a teenager, thinks he's the most boring, lamest dude alive and wants nothing to do with the traditions they had while she was growing up - especially reading Henry Fox's books.
But when Henry Fox begins a reading programme at their local library, she is sat in the front row. Because she wants to be, not because Alex is forcing her. Not because Alex is slightly in love with a man he's never met, the first person to actually see him.

Alex isn’t even sure what he is doing here. Sure, he has just been dumped or something and Bea didn’t want him to be alone, but it’s not like he has any interest in being a part of the fun. He isn’t exactly in their friends’ group; he is just Bea’s brother. And as much as Alex loves Bea, he viciously hates her brother. He is a stuck-up self-righteous prick who thinks he is better than anyone else, just because he is smart or whatever. And Alex isn’t even convinced that he actually is smart at all.
“Try to be nice, okay?” Alex overhears Bea talking to her brother as they enter the hotel lobby.
“Tell that to him.” Henry hisses, clearly gesturing towards Alex who casually flips him off with a fake smile plastered to his lips.
“Both of you!” Bea raises her voice which doesn’t happen all that often and Henry caves.
“I’ll behave.” He mutters in a low voice. “If he stops being an idiot.”___________________________________________
Alex and Henry hate each other. That much is clear to Alex. So, when Nora decides to make them share a room on their trip to Italy, Alex thinks she might have lost her mind. Afterall, there is no one worse than Henry Fox, to be forced to spend time with.

Alex drops the letter as if he’d been burned. “Oh my god,” he croaks out. “June’s getting married?”
“Oh, sugar,” Ellen takes his chin in her hand, thumb rubbing soothing circles over his cheek.
“Prince Henry has no interest in women. They’ve asked for you, darling.”
Or: Alex is a noble, and the last thing he ever expected to see in his lifetime was His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales extending an invitation to court him. For marriage. It goes about as well as you’d expect.

Alex’s last text to Henry.
4 months ago and immediately after Henry had landed in London. It was the final message after a dozen more filled with worry and anxiety, questions about where Henry was and what Alex could do to help. It was resignation. Acceptance of the fact that Henry had left, had left him, and not just their bed.
Henry scrolled up from his waiting message; the words ‘Oh, Alex, I’m so sorry’ were pulsing in the text box. He itched to send it but would it be well received? It had been 4 months after all, and for all he knew, Alex had blocked him, anyway. If he never sent the message, he’d never know for sure whether Alex had pressed the ‘block’ button.
Or, Henry grapples with the repercussions of leaving Alex at the Lake House as he watches Alex from afar, unable to comfort him. But, as in every universe, they find their way back to one another. Eventually.

Summary
Henry has the best first date of his life and thinks that maybe he should start believing in fate again.
The next day he finally goes to the doctor who shares his concerns about his recent symptoms, especially with his family history. He keeps going on dates with Alex and doesn't tell him because he's probably fine, right? The day after their 4th date he gets diagnosed with cancer.
He tells himself he'll end things with Alex before Alex gets too attached, to make sure he hurts as little people as possible should he die.
After recovering from his first round of chemo he caves and calls Alex.
The next day he runs into Alex in the hospital, he lies about meeting a friend and blocks Alex when he gets home.

“A wedding, actually,” Henry replies. “A small wedding. They would miss me if I wasn’t there.” It’s a humorous statement that is laced with a small chuckle.
“Who is getting married?” the bartender asks. “Best friend? A sibling?”

After their reconciliation, Henry and Alex decide that they're not going to let anything come between them anymore. To make sure that their relationship is taken seriously and no longer dismissed, they make the decision to take it to the next level. What starts as a crazy plan quickly turns into one of the best evenings of their lives; a day to remember and a day where history was made.

Here in Oxford, in all his technicolour glory. Older, taller, more muscular but Henry knows the set of those shoulders and the cascading ringlets of burnished mahogany anywhere. Hell, he has done nothing but fantasise about them for the last five years. He knows how they feel as he cards his fingers through them. Can smell the shampoo that they are washed in as the smell haunts his dreams.
But it will also be the world’s worst cosmic joke if his husband is here when Henry is in his second year at Oxford. Even more so as he sees his boyfriend Tom leave the very same shop that Alex is so intently scrutinising.
