Robby’s eyes soften in that heart-pulverizing way before he leaves. How is everyone not in love with him? Santos cuts in: “Are you having a stroke, Huckleberry?”
His stomach flips like a stuffed pig in mud. He sometimes worries that she’s a mind reader. “What? No—I’m fine!”
“Sure, Jan, and I’m the fucking Queen of England. Code stroke over here!” Santos shouts, raising a vodka cranberry that sloshes over the lip of the glass.
Heat flames Whitaker’s face. He’s feeling very Dennis right now. Doe-eyed Dennis.

Summary
In saving Gustave at the cliff, Verso gets more than he bargained for as the dork named Gustave gets teleported with him to the Crimson Forest. But when mysterious happenings on the canvas start tearing the world apart, Verso and Gustave realize that they must work together if they're going to survive. Despite mutually disturbing visions, the two men brave fields of fearsome Nevrons and other oddities to escape.
Meanwhile, a stoic Lune and a sympathetic Sciel deal with a grieving Maelle as they search for Gustave. Even with the addition of Monoco, Lune remains pessimistic. But when the Disaster Expedition stumbles upon something profound, Lune and Sciel follow the spark of exploration to uncover its mysteries.

Gustave thought it was the end. ‘For those who come after,’ lingered on his lips, cold fear squeezing his stomach in its icy grip as a blinding flash of white seared his eyesight. But when he wakes up, vibrant, ebullient color leaching into his vision, he’s overcome with a wash of safety. Maybe it’s the fact that the white-haired man is no longer in sight, but Gustave feels buoyant, light. A canopy of brilliant red stretches for what seems like miles above him.

The first person Gustave sees when he returns, though, is not his foster sister Maelle, with her ginger ponytail and placid, grey eyes. It’s Verso, and like some animalistic freak he latches on to the man’s visage like a lifeline. Those grey eyes are seared into his vision like twin moons, and that dark, impossibly lush hair shines with the brilliant streaks of moonlight within it. He’s old, but not really. Older, and carries with him the experience of being elsewhere in the world.
“Who are you?” Gustave asks, and it’s like no one else exists in the world. Maybe Maelle answers. Maybe she doesn’t. But what Gustave knows is that Verso is someone he should take the time to get to know, however that process comes about. Gustave yearns, and for the first time in a long time, he listens. -
