Summary
Just modern au jingren story. They’re living together in a very filthy and old block of flats in one of the districts of a city I didn’t specify. I wanted the place to look like these old parts of Hong Kong with lots of neons (because *aesthetic*) + a few years back when people still lived in less convenient conditions than we do now.
Ren used to work in a forge and created the most beautiful weapons you can imagine and Jing Yuan was a general in the army. When he has to adopt Yanqing, he doesn’t want to put himself in danger and resigns from his position. He is looked down on and people consider this act a complete idiocy as he goes down in hierarchy and starts to coach young soldiers. After the country was taken over by the current government Ren was forced to leave his job and settled for working in a pitiful weapon selling company. As their lives get more miserable in a blink of an eye, they still try to make the life of Yanqing happy and make sure the boy gets everything he ever needs. Oh and Mimi is here too, just in a modern version of a very fat&fluffy (though she prefers the term *well-fed*) cat loved by the family.

Yanqing’s mouth formed a thin line, and he diverted his gaze elsewhere. At the hustle and bustle of Luofu in the afternoon, Starskiffs coming and going—anything. His brain spun, replaying Yunli’s question while searching for an answer. Then, after several dead ends, he gave up.
"What does that have to do with anything?"
"Everything!"
"Everything how?"
"Because," Yunli raised her index finger in the air, pointing at him like a teacher at his old academy teaching a slow student. "Because you can’t just treat a girl as a Cloud Knight, or a swordmaster, or—or you can’t just follow her around all the time and show interest in her only to ask her to spar!"
"Well, I am interested in you—"
"And you can’t say stuff like that!"
Or, puberty finally hits Yanqing, and having Jing Yuan as his role model in some aspects of life (namely: romance) seems like a bad idea.

Shen Jiu escaped from Wu Yanzi before Yue Qi ever found him. He roamed around and got into trouble with another rich brat and his guards.
However, another brat came along and helped him. Since then, he always met that brat whenever he got in trouble. Either that brat was as much as a troublemaking boy like Shen Jiu, or their luck was the same kind of shitty.
When Shen Jiu scaled the wall into a grand mansion to steal some plums, he saw the brat on the other side, wanting to jump over the wall to get out. "Oh, it's Liu-shao's house..."
Seeing the homeless man that had caught his attention since their first meeting, Young Master Liu frowned, "What are you doing here? Wanting to steal?"
