He’ll be here for pack meetings.” They only know about those through Isaac, who has been trying to convince Scott to join Derek’s pack with his sad, SPCA commercial worthy puppy faces every time they see him in the locker room, their chemistry class, and the cafeteria.
Derek tilts his head to the side. “Yeah. He’s in.”
“Cool.” Stiles lightly pushes Scott’s shoulder. He still looks like he drank pure lemon juice laced with wolfsbane. Oh, well. The love would come in good time. Hopefully. “And we’re off. Bye, Derek.”
“And you’re in too,” Derek says as soon as they turn their backs to him.

Summary
Stiles is the sheriff of Beacon Hills, and Derek's an inveterate cattle hustler better known as The Outlaw Derek Hale. It's a shame he's so goddamn pretty, then.

Hale gives Stiles a rakish, dangerous smile. “Aw, that Whittemore kid’s got enough cattle he won't miss a few.”
“Be that as it may, the law’s the law,” Stiles says. “I'm charged with taking this property back to its rightful owner.”
“And what if I don’t let you?”
Stiles scowls. “If you put up a fight, I'm within my rights as sheriff to shoot you.”
Hale eyes him, an inscrutable smile quirking one side of his mouth. “You're not gonna shoot me.”
“Sure,” Stiles agrees amiably. “‘Cause you’re gonna leave this herd right here and ride away, all agreeable-like.”
They sit on their respective horses and stare each other down for a moment that stretches out like taffy. The cattle sway along between them, snuffling and clopping on their way. Stiles has enough time to give some serious thought to what he would do if Hale, for once, didn't take his offer of a peaceful resolution.

“Oh,” Stiles said, his voice coming out low and breathy, “fuck me.”
“I don’t think that’s on the syllabus, but we can check to see if there’s a spot open in any of his classes,” Scott said, grinning.
“This isn’t an actual professor, though,” Stiles insisted, unable to resist brushing his thumb over the sharp line of the man’s bearded jaw. He was laughing at something off-camera, the shot taken in three-quarters view, his coat collar casually rumpled and opened to reveal a sliver of a simple grey t-shirt. The whole thing was deliberately calculated to lend him a more accessible feel, and god help him, Stiles was falling for it.

When Stiles signed up for Dr. Hale’s intro to history class, he had two goals: knock out the credits his advisor was bugging him to complete before he graduated, and spend a few hours a week daydreaming about his sexy professor’s salt and pepper beard.
Derek, a few months away from turning forty and not sure when his life had started feeling so damn lonely, had never encountered someone like Stiles before. “It looks like you’re trying to steal my cats,” Derek says. He’s leaning against the doorway, arms crossed over his chest, eyes dark with all sorts of judgement, and in a perfect world, this would have turned out so, so differently...

Stiles wondered if he could just stand still enough to make the wolf think he was a tree. A very bright red and jean-clad tree. He doubted it, but one could hope.
He knew it was a lost cause when the wolf turned fully, lips pulled back from its sharp teeth—so very sharp, good fucking Lord!—and began walking towards Stiles.
“I didn’t see anything!” Stiles shouted, both hands out in front of himself and sweat instantly breaking out across his skin. “I swear to you! I didn’t see anything! I didn’t see anything! I won’t tell anyone! I won’t! I’ll keep this to myself, until the day I die! I promise! I promise!”

It only took a few more feet of trodding through the underbrush to finally find his dog, and the closer he got, the calmer Peter felt. Otis was still barking, but now he was close enough to recognize that it didn’t sound like alarm. It sounded like something between 'play!' and 'squirrel!'
Peter realized he was probably spending too much time with only a dog for company.
“Otis! What is it?”
The dog was wagging his tail, guarding the roots of a tree, and as he got closer, Peter saw that it wasn’t actually the tree that got him hyped up, it was the shaggy ball of red fur nestled at the base.
“The hell…”
It was a small fox. At least it looked small, but Peter had no idea how big full grown foxes were. It looked small next to Otis.
