Welt sits opposite her, eyes hidden behind glasses that reflect the passing light from the windows. March is trying too hard to sound cheerful. Pom-Pom scolds her for gesturing too wildly near the food tray. Trash Cake — their resident critter from Herta’s Space Station that Pom-Pom begrudgingly allowed to stay aboard — was pawing at the ribbons on March’s boots, completely enamoured by them.
It’s almost normal.
It’s not the same.Life aboard the Astral Express goes on — reports, repairs, the same hum of the engines that once carried their laughter. Dan Heng tells himself he’s fine. That peace means healing. That silence isn’t the same as loss.

He sticks out the hairpin awkwardly. It almost slips from his grip, but he manages to grasp it just in time.

the game was a huge multiplayer game, like vrchat on steroids, but she was never into multiplayer games growing up and making online friends wasn't on her priority list. she just wanted something interesting—something fun—but she didn't feel the need to get close with random people she would never meet in real life. she was just "pomni," and only her name should be enough for her group of strangers.

He glances up to grin widely at her and she tilts her head and smiles back, letting the warmth in his eyes seep through her skin, into her bones.
