Summary
“No communication issues?” Thorin repeated, looking at the hobbit now with even more uncertainty. “You didn’t think to tell me that this hobbit only spoke his own language?”
“A minor setback, really,” the wizard said, waving off the dwarf’s concerns with a smile. He squeezed Bilbo’s shoulder before clearing his throat. “Young Master Baggins, here, is the son of one of the Shire’s most proficient Westron speakers. He was exposed to the language as a child, although he hasn’t had much use for it in his lifetime so his skills have, understandably, diminished. But I have no doubt that, given the opportunity to learn, he would pick it up quite quickly. He is a clever fellow if I’ve ever known one.”
(OR: Thorin needs a burglar, Bilbo needs a dictionary, and Gandalf needs a drink.)

Summary
“Is that what mom looked like? Did she look like that when you saw her?”
Katara looks up at him from her sewing and gives him a look. It’s the same look he’s always gotten when he’s tried to get this information out of her. It’s a look of frustration and sadness and hurt. It is not a memory she has ever liked to reflect on, seeing her mother dead, and she doesn’t understand why her brother can’t let it go. She doesn’t understand why he keeps pushing her for this information years later.
“Don’t ask me things like that,” she says. “You should know it upsets me.”

Summary
He can deal with people doubting him, questioning him, talking badly of him, and even attempting to assassinate him.
The one thing he cannot deal with, however, is people treating Ambassador Sokka the same.

Summary
“Do you think she realizes I have neither a beard nor any axes?” Bilbo said idly. “I mean, of course I know it is an idiomatic phrase, but it is rather funny when you think about it.”
“You have a beard and axes of the spirit,” Thorin said firmly.
---
Thorin has always been happy to see Bilbo adopt dwarfish ways, until it is pointed out to him that Bilbo, not actually being a dwarf, might be happier in their marriage if Thorin were to make a bit of effort to adopt some hobbitish ways in turn.Naturally, Thorin goes about this in a sensible and moderate manner.

Summary
Bilbo had a sudden, cheerful realization. “Oh, my, this must mean you’ve already dealt with the problem of the dragon without me!”
Bofur frowned. “Bilbo, no–”
“Sorry, you haven’t dealt with the dragon?”

Summary
[“Here.” The boy holds out a cigarette for him. “You look like you need it.”
Sokka takes it with a grateful smile and is just about to get his lighter when the boy holds out his finger with a small flame flickering above it.
“Oh.” He brings the tip of his cigarette above the flame to light it. “Thanks.”
“No problem.” The boy jerks his head back towards the porch, a clear invitation for Sokka to join him, then he turns around and walks back to the bench. Sokka follows him without a word.]
OR
Sokka’s life slips into meaninglessness after Yue’s death. Nothing seems fun or exciting anymore, he mostly just allows himself to be dragged along with whatever his friends want to do in a desperate attempt to find something to hold onto, though it’s all mostly futile.
Then he meets Zuko, who’s moved into Yue’s old place. Zuko, who’s interesting and strange and kind. Who doesn’t judge Sokka even when he probably should. Who maybe gets it in a way no one else around him does.Bookmarked by rivendoll
