“Have you heard of a saying ‘all is fair in love and war’?” Harry nods in response. “Sometimes it’s the other way around. Sometimes nothing is fair in love and war.”
“That still doesn’t make it right.”
“Maybe.” Sirius breathes out. “That’s why I didn’t want you to know any of this, Harry. I didn’t want you to think that James didn’t love Lily, because he did. He loved her so much and you are proof of that love.”
“He just loved Regulus more.” Harry whispers, fixing his gaze on the starry sky just so he can avoid meeting Sirius’ gaze. “It’s just like Barty said, Regulus was the love of my dad’s life, not my mum.”
(or, a universe, where after Barty gets caught impersonating Moody, Sirius demands to get answers from him about his little brother in during it all, Harry discovers something about his father and the aforementioned brother.)

He feels it in his arm when his mother squeezes it a little harder than a mother should. He felt it, the water rising in his throat, when his brother slipped out the window and into the night. He often wonders if it'd be easier to just let himself sink.

Regulus gets sent back to school with a mission from the Dark Lord himself— find the “beast in the chamber” and claim its fangs without killing it. But when a certain curly-haired bespectacled boy asks for a rather large favor, everything suddenly gets a lot more complicated.

“Please, Sirius, be careful.” Remus shouts, watching the prince run off on the sand, his shoes in hand.
“Why, Remus?” Sirius calls back, turning around and smiling at his guard.
“The shore is dangerous.”
“And how could that possibly be true?” Regulus hums.
"This is where the pirates tend to dock themselves, not wanting to get too close to actual docks.”
“I sincerely doubt that there will be any pirates right now.” Regulus shakes his head, jerking his chin towards his brother then gesturing with his hand towards the ocean, “There is no one nearby, we would see a pirate ship.”
James hums, “Pirates are not going to dock their ship in a place that is visible.” He jerks his chin towards where Sirius is running, and Remus nods, “Only cocky pirates will dock themselves at an actual port and take someone there. Pillages happen in the night, and the ship is not to be seen until they leave.”
“Oh Jamie,” says a voice from behind them, “I’m wounded you should say that about us.”
...
James and Remus are pirates that went under cover as knights to kidnap the princes. Along the way, they happened to fall in love.
