He had expected it to be slightly worn down, given how often Phoenix is wearing it. The warmth in his chest returns at the thought of Phoenix giving this to him—something painfully intimate about it all.
No. He shakes his head, trying to shoo the thoughts away. He had simply felt guilty about everything. That’s all this is.
Still—he decides to take what he gets and puts on the hoodie. It’s quite comfortable—far more loose than his usual attire, and less restricting.
But as soon as the hoodie is on his shoulders unzipped, he notices something that he didn’t think to account for.
It smells like Phoenix.

Jesse gave what her father would have called a very unladylike snort. “You certainly need all the help you can get, seeing as you’re not even properly on the team, so I hardly think you’re in a position to judge. And by the way,” Jesse sneered at the girl, checking her out from her sneakers to her bedhead, and-- fuck it, why not-- she pulled out the air quotes: “I’m not your ‘bro’ or your ‘bud,’ just so we’re clear, Eugenia.”
The reserve laughed. “By the way,” she drawled, in flawless imitation, “It’s Gene. And I’d never make that mistake with you, princess,” she finished, smirking, and Jesse’s cardigan dropped from her fingers, her cheeks flushed pink. For a minute she was actually speechless, and the Kings’ Row team snickered, no one harder than Katayama, but the girl didn’t laugh, just picked up her sweater, offering it up to her with a bow and a wink from those dark eyes, like they were both in on the joke, and that was the first time Jesse met Eugenia Labao.

The end of Jugem Jugem’s tail whips against her neck as he burrows down inside his master’s collar. “Remember,” says Tae, revving the engine, “if anyone asks, Kyuu-chan – we’ve never heard of Gintama.”
“Never even once,” agrees Kyuubei, muffled by the helmet’s visor.
(Tae and Kyuubei take a nice, relaxing, non-suspicious holiday; and in the meantime, for almost certainly unrelated reasons, Shinpachi's life goes to hell.)
