Summary
Ratchet tries desperately to feel anything for the poor spark. Regret, sorrow, fear, anything but sickening relief at realizing it’s not one of his own. This mech probably had friends and family too, people who will miss him, who will be destroyed at finding out he met his end here on the dirty floor of a ruin where an Autobot and a Decepticon played at being more than enemies. Yet, here Ratchet is, barely able to see past the purple emblem on the mech’s cooling chassis. He has never felt more disgusted with himself.
What has this war done to him?
“We can’t do this,” Ratchet tells the darkness, scrubbing a servo over his face, begging himself to cry or scream or do anything to show he hasn’t completely lost himself. “We can’t keep doing this.”

Deadlock winced as he lifted a hand to shield his optics against the sudden light. “Damn. Would have thought you had enough of sitting in the dark.”

Or: Four and a half million years ago, a bounty hunter from the Dead End met a miner who fancied himself a poet, and that alone changed everything.

Soft Memory Errors
Soft Memory Errors is a re-examination of MTMTE Drift/Deadlock's character, in an attempt to fully utilize a character built from interesting concepts with patchy (or non-existent) execution. What started as a one-off drabble turned into this series when the 2020 quarantine left me with a lot more time on my hands than I anticipated. The series title is a reference to the computing glitch soft memory error, as the series has a recurring theme of fragmenting memories and the residual processor damage Drift sustained.
