He finally opened his eyes a fraction when the bottle was pulled away from his mouth, looking up at his tormentor; his features were cloaked in shadow, obscured by some spell.
Xie Lian could have asked any of his questions then. But there was only one thing he wanted to say.
“My husband will be here soon.”
“Oh?” was all his kidnapper said, sounding amused.
Suddenly two fingers were placed against Xie Lian’s pulse point, and they gave two soft taps. Xie Lian nodded once.
A soft hum, and then his captor crouched in front of him and held the soaked wad of cloth against his lips. “Open up, Your Highness.”

San Lang reached out and brushed his fingers gently across one of the flowers. “That’s all most people see, but anyone who has ever worked with roses will tell you that just under the surface…” San Lang reached his hand into the bush and snapped off a stem, bringing it up to show Xie Lian, “...lies danger.”

Sure enough, along the length of the stem sat several large thorns. Something warm bubbled up in Xie Lian’s chest.

“That’s really how San Lang sees me?” he asked.

For the second time that night, San Lang took the prince’s hand. He bent down and brushed his lips across the back of it.

“Beautiful on the surface…” he murmured before gently turning the hand over so he could see the palm. “With danger hiding just beneath.” This time his lips brushed against rough, calloused skin, but he didn’t recoil. He treated it just as reverently as he had the perfect skin on the back of Xie Lian’s hand. Like it was just as worthy. Like it was just as perfect.
