Summary
"My lord," he said, "the prince of Orkney is come."
Though mounted proud and upright before the gates of Dunpendyr, by the time the many mormaers and warriors had assembled to greet him, Gawain had dismounted. His horse, whose rains he had not yet given over, was a great red beast of an animal which made its owner look an even slighter figure, especially rain-soaked as he was, and weary from days of hard riding.

Summary
“You’re very quiet this evening,” Dinadan says in a casual manner, letting the furry edge of his surcoat fall back down over his leg. A disappointment and a relief.
“I suppose,” Agravaine replies tersely. He feels terribly tense.
“Where goes our garrulous instigator? Have you a grim affliction?” Then Dinadan frowns, suddenly serious. “You aren’t taken with some fair maid, are you? I’ll slay myself if I must hear another acquaintance pontificate on love. My blood will be on your hands, sir.” -

“I loathe morality plays,” Guinevere commented to Gawain, who was laying back on sumptuous cushions and looking greyish. The curtained tent from which they were viewing the play maintained a degree of distance from the rest of the court, arranged in little groups upon the field and facing the plain wooden stage.

One of the more singular cases of my career occurred on the grounds and environs of the Camelot boarding house. It is a large sprawling old Tudor hunting lodge, turned to a boarding house when its ancient owners fell to humbler times.

Summary
The problem with Gawain Orkney, Dinadan mused, as he rooted around his fridge for a disappointing strawberry yogurt, was not that in general he considered negative attention to be flattering (although he did). It was not that criticism bounced off him like a tennis ball off a trampoline (although it did). It was not even that deeply damaged teenagers with regrettable interests took it upon themselves to vitriolically defend his honor anytime Dinadan criticized him (although they did). The problem with Gawain Orkney, unfortunately, was that nearly six months ago he had decided that Dinadan was his own pet commentary creator, and had followed him on every social media platform he possessed with a level of faux-friendliness that pulled just short of obvious spite.

“Before we go down to the courtyard, I wanted to give you something,” the king said. “A long time ago, you were made to swear to always allow a man to surrender. As your lord and king, I free you from this oath.”
Gawain nodded. He didn’t remember swearing himself to this man, but he didn’t remember very much. -

Gawain didn’t say, because he didn’t say things like that. Perhaps he didn’t even think it consciously. “Someone doesn’t have to be evil to ruin your life,” he thought aloud instead.
“You got your revenge,” Guinevere said, with a dash of pettiness in her voice, “why shouldn’t I get mine?”

Summary
Several minutes later, the three of them are clustered around Lore’s cellphone, trying to create Gawain a Tinder profile.
“How old are you?”
“Seventeen hundred years. Ish.” He pauses. “That’s not going to work. How old do I look in human years, Lore?”
“Forty-five,” she says without thinking, then claps a hand over her mouth as Guinevere cackles and Gawain flushes.
[Editor’s note: Gawain became a vampire at age twenty-eight.]
“Just say thirty,” Guinevere suggests, before he can retaliate.

“I wasn’t “hanging around on the phone,” Gawain said with aggressive quotation marks, leaning forward a bit, so his hand gestures were right in Galehaut’s face. Or considering the height difference, his chest. “I was locked in an intense psychological battle with the HOA, and you should be thanking me for shouldering that burden.”
Galehaut tried to scoff but ended up producing something more like an offended hiss. “Yeah-- yeah, thank you, Gawain, for letting me patch the drywall and mow the lawn and assemble the shed! You’re so generous.”
“You wish I was so generous,” he said meaningfully, looking up at Galehaut with a smirk, who suddenly realized he had Gawain pinned against the counter.- Language:

“Trick or Treat, you fucking whores!” Gawain said from the doorway, with such earnest joy in his voice that they mostly weren’t even mad about being called whores.
Owain gave an awkward wave. “Hi, Gawain. That’s-- you’re not a cat.”
“Obviously.”
“You´re always a cat, though.”
Lynette, who was lounging at the foot of the stairs, looked up with a smirk. “Dinadan called him a furry on twitter.”Series

All of them turned to the door when it creaked hesitantly open. The admittance stood in frozen embarrassment, at his lateness, at the fact they were staring at him. He was so obviously not the professor that most of them looked back down at their tables and phones with secondhand chagrin. Gawain did not.

Summary
It was one of those days where everything was hazily bad. Not unbearable but heavy and dull and just one half step to the side of what it should be. A day that happens sometimes to some people, and is mostly made tolerable with similarly dispirited company.
So they were sitting on the living room floor of the Du Loc apartment, where there was a thick rug good for absently running one’s fingers on. Gawain was vaguely pretending to read Tom Stoppard, and Lancelot was tracing circles on the carpet, and watching Gawain, and humming tunelessly.Series
