Summary
She stumbled backwards, knowing with horror that she was about to trip and fall and hit the ground in utter humiliation - when a hand shot out and grabbed her by the wrist. She was yanked back to her feet.
“Dreadfully sorry,” said the perpetrator of Alicent’s very near demise. “Are you alright?” Heart thumping, Alicent looked up, half-convinced she was on the floor and just hadn’t noticed it yet - and found herself staring straight into the violet eyes of Rhaenyra Targaryen.

“Mother, when is Father returning?”
Aegon squirmed as his mother pulled a comb through his long unruly blonde locks with a sigh. He had refused to let her cut it in the year since one of his nursemaids had remarked offhandedly how he had become Rhaenyra’s spitting image.

Summary
Rhaenyra realized, suddenly, that Alicent’s body wasn’t a statue at all; it was a corral, just like Syrax’s, and there was an ugly, human thing trapped within. Without understanding why, Rhaenyra smiled again. She was dizzy with instantaneous joy, the kind that almost blistered.
Before Rhaenyra and Alicent were enemies, they were friends. Before they were friends, they were enemies. There is no before; there will be no after.Bookmarked by semisomething

Summary
She can’t escape the throne. Or the girl it was meant to devour. Alicent Hightower wears the regency like a crown of thorns. Confined by duty, something’s going to cleave. Maybe the realm. Maybe her heart. Maybe the line between them.
"One year,” Rhaenyra spits the words, “and if you linger a day beyond, Alicent, I will take the throne with fire.”
Or;
Viserys died earlier within the six-year time skip. Alicent successfully becomes queen regent. Rhaenyra arrives in King’s Landing. It changes everything.

Summary
It was entirely unfair, Alicent thought, that on this day (a day where she was hungover, had no make-up on, was sweating to the point that she could feel it beading on her temple and upper lip, and her shirt was sticking everywhere) she would come face-to-face with the most gorgeous woman she had ever seen.
“Hi,” the object of Alicent’s frustration said amiably, standing behind the till in the Student Union’s coffee shop. “How are you?”

"Commander Targaryen," Alicent said, voice crisp over the comms, deliberately omitting the callsign everyone else used, "this is a controlled systems failure drill. You’re expected to respond accordingly."
Rhaenyra stretched her arms behind her head. "Relax, Hightower. I’m just getting comfortable."
-
Rhaenyra Targaryen is everything Alicent Hightower hates—reckless, arrogant, and incapable of following a plan that isn’t hers. And Rhaenyra has spent years pushing every single one of Alicent’s buttons just to see what happens. A story as old as time—except for that one of them is getting launched into space. And the other is charged in keeping her alive.

Such an unusual coupling, between two women, would be frowned upon in any other setting but Targaryens do not adhere to the laws of nature, never mind the laws of men.
Or: Alicent and Rhaenyra marry and via Valyrian magic, are able to produce an heir. And then some.

“You’re staring.”
“Just thinking, my princess.”
Rhaenyra turned sideways, moving into a position that changed her center of balance and was twice as risky. A few centimeters to the side, Alicent could all but see it - splat on the ground. “Penny for your thoughts?”
“My thoughts are worth far more than that.”

“Fair play,” Rhaenyra replies, “But you can’t just spend all summer wasting away here, your only friend to speak of being the 30 year old lesbian who cleans your pool.”
“That seems like something you made up just now,” Aegon responds lightly, “Rather than an actual rule.”
or,
After her mugshot makes it into the tabloids, Rhaenyra strikes a deal to keep her inheritance that involves a summer spent working at her cousin's landscaping company. This brings her to the house of delinquent teenager Aegon Hightower and his lonely, high-strung mother.

Alicent never meant to end up in entertainment journalism. She wanted to report on politics, economics, war correspondence- things that people took seriously. Yet every event seemed to bring her face to face with a silver-haired Targaryen who infuriatingly refused to take anything seriously.

Alicent is the Director of Communications for the Vice President. Rhaenyra serves as the White House Liaison to the President. Which means they see each other every day. Something that would not be a problem at all—if not for the fact that Alicent absolutely hates Rhaenyra's guts.

Summary
And even if getting Rhaenyra in as a soloist was a staggering show of nepotism, she was still the best concert pianist on the planet. It was like when Dmitri Junior recorded Shostakovich’s second. You could get mad about it for a bit, but it was ultimately fair game. Alicent had already reached all these conclusions because Viserys had spoken to her weeks ago about programming the Concerto, which only had the unwanted effect of giving her time to turn it over in her brain like a particularly nauseating Rubix cube. Each solution of the puzzle led her to the same conclusion: she would be seeing Rhaenyra imminently, and there wasn’t a damn thing she could do about it.
After ten years apart, Rhaenyra Targaryen re-enters Alicent's life for a set of solo engagements with her orchestra. Things go about as well as expected (not very).

There is a clearing with a stand of trees at its centre in the deep of the Kingswood. No roads or paths may access it; the forest surrounding too dense, tangled roots as large as dwellings. And yet, to walk three hundred paces due south one will find a lodge. It is where Rhaenyra’s heart resides. The quiet, ragged pieces that remain.
