Aemond had always believed that fear was weakness. But now fear came not from battle or defeat. It came from the thought of what might become of the boy he had just let go.
He laughed softly, a low, disbelieving sound that broke the silence.
Of course. Aemond Targaryen had always wanted what belonged to his brother. Jacaerys had belonged to Aegon first. And perhaps, in some twisted way, he always would.
So he burns the world instead.
The smallfolk told the tale in whispers. They said a mad prince had lost his reason to the gods, that he burned not for conquest but because he could not die.
They said the Seven had turned their faces from him, that the fire obeyed him because nothing else would.

King Viserys is dead. The Hightowers have usurped the throne. While the Blacks plan their war, Jace feels only the hollow weight of the betrayal of a loved one, consumed by guilt he flees Dragonstone.
