Summary
Mike Wheeler fucking hated college.
College brought on this realization for Mike, that it is so goddamn exhausting to exist. Not in an end-his-life type of way, but more so an awkwardness that seemed to follow him around wherever he went. Like a comical lit-up arrow above his head that said look at this lanky sad excuse for a teenage boy, he can’t hold a single conversation.
Not that he cared much for being attractive or popular or conversational or any of those things really. But it was like he’d somehow become more aware. More aware of his flaws, more aware of other people’s skills, and especially aware of how everyone seemed to be moving forward but him.

Mike is depressed at his school, Will is thriving at NYU. When Will makes an impromptu visit on Halloween, Mike tries to hide how pathetic his life has been. Mike's never been good at hiding anything from Will.

Summary
Will moves to NYU, leaving Hawkins seeking to find a life without the constant reminder of the pain, while Mike chooses to stay in Hawkins, rooted in the familiarity of the life he has always known. Before he leaves, Will writes him a letter. Not a friendly goodbye. It’s everything he never said, everything he buried deep down, finally put into words.
A confession that Will believed he would take to his grave.
And it doesn’t fix anything at first.
The letter doesn’t bring closure like it was supposed to. It makes everything worse; it leaves Mike sitting with feelings he doesn’t know what to do with, replaying every moment between them, wondering what was real and what he missed. It turns their friendship into something complicated, something painful.
It creates distance that they both believed would never happen.But it also changes them; it forces them to face the gravity of their unspoken words. And even though it hurts, even though it pulls them apart for a while, the universe forces them to realize the bond between them is deeper than friendship, the love between them is impossible to ignore.
