A confession that Will believed he would take to his grave.
And it doesn’t fix anything at first.
The letter doesn’t bring closure like it was supposed to. It makes everything worse; it leaves Mike sitting with feelings he doesn’t know what to do with, replaying every moment between them, wondering what was real and what he missed. It turns their friendship into something complicated, something painful.
It creates distance that they both believed would never happen.But it also changes them; it forces them to face the gravity of their unspoken words. And even though it hurts, even though it pulls them apart for a while, the universe forces them to realize the bond between them is deeper than friendship, the love between them is impossible to ignore.

Will is waiting, yet he’d waited his whole life, that teasing little shit, had a boyfriend, which was not Mike. They met after months, it was casual, Mike managed to tell him that he loved him, but the topic switched off easily…So, they took a deep breath and began running as fast as they could, leaving Hawkins behind, leaving all those horrible memories that littered that old, deeply sick city. They ran with difficulty, their breaths muffled by uncontrollable laughter and smiles. Breathing rapidly and hearts pounding in their chests, they ran and ran, until they were so exhausted that they felt their breath give out and they almost fainted. They turned in unison, their hands still holding, Hawkins now just a dot in the distance. Was it the end? Or was it just the beginning?

When Mike moves to New York for grad school in 1993, he is finally starting to figure himself out, and he wants to fix things with Will. He has no idea where to begin, so he writes a play about it.
Will has been building a life for himself in NYC as a painter. He has a boyfriend, volunteers with an AIDS housing program, and pays his rent by acting in other people’s plays – including, as it turns out, Mike’s.
