Summary
What had surprised Jace at the outset was how readily Aemond had agreed to his request to tutor him. At the time, Jace had taken it as a rare show of goodwill. Only later, after enduring several of his lessons, did he see the truth of it: his uncle had not agreed out of kindness, but because it offered him a stage upon which to flaunt his own mastery and expose Jace’s shortcomings again and again.

Aemond had always believed that fear was weakness. But now fear came not from battle or defeat. It came from the thought of what might become of the boy he had just let go.
He laughed softly, a low, disbelieving sound that broke the silence.
Of course. Aemond Targaryen had always wanted what belonged to his brother. Jacaerys had belonged to Aegon first. And perhaps, in some twisted way, he always would.
So he burns the world instead.
The smallfolk told the tale in whispers. They said a mad prince had lost his reason to the gods, that he burned not for conquest but because he could not die.
They said the Seven had turned their faces from him, that the fire obeyed him because nothing else would.

He was releasing his hammer and letting it fall to the ground before he could think in the face of the deity before him. The breathtaking smile, one that always made Jayce’s heart skip a beat and his mouth water with an overwhelming longing, left him wondering when his heart had been stolen.
How had it found its way into Viktor’s palm?
Jayce had failed the moment he saw that smile again.
