Summary
When he’s nine, Aerion sneaks out of the Red Keep and meets a hungry boy from Flea Bottom who mocks his fancy accent and treats him like a person instead of a prince. For a brief, impossible season, they become friends. Aerion is sweet and curious and he promises he’ll remember.
Years later, Dunk finds work on the road and a way into tourneys, while Aerion has grown into the court’s shining threat, cruel, untouchable, and practiced at turning people into lessons. When they meet again, Aerion recognizes Dunk immediately, and acts like he’s found something that belongs to him.

Summary
Where does friendship end and duty begin?
It was a question that suddenly struck Ser Duncan as it was his own friend, his own King Aegon, whose decree had put his own family's legitimacy into question, and Aerion would suffer no humiliation nor any consequence of what gave him and Duncan a greater purpose in their lives at Summerhall.
For the whole world may be put to the torch, every man and woman to the sword, but neither Duncan nor Aerion would surrender their children to condemnation.
