    Summary

Dohoon's hand stills. He’s entirely ensnared by Youngjae’s gaze, the sharpness of his command.

Youngjae just looks and looks. An eternity passes in the space between.

“You can let me,” Dohoon eventually says. Cards face up on the table. “You can let me, instead.”

Youngjae's impossible to read, except for when he's looking at Junghwan. Dohoon struggles with impulse control.

He looks up. Puts a hand on Youngjae’s thigh. A thumb at the inseam. Youngjae sucks in a sharp breath.

“But you should know,” Dohoon says. “You’re really not that easy to get.”

A rush of air comes out through Youngjae’s nose. He’s biting at his mouth. “No?”

“No,” Dohoon says, thumb stroking back and forth at his inner thigh. “Not if you’re not looking.”

He studies Youngjae’s face as the meaning of his words sinks in. His eyes are so dark. Two black mirrors staring down at him. Youngjae’s breath comes unsteadily: catching, hitching—

    “He’s not looking, Youngjae.”

—And then he isn’t breathing at all.

“I know,” Dohoon says. His fingers press in harder against Youngjae’s thigh. “But you are. The way you look at him—”

    “Stop.”

Dohoon stops. He closes his mouth and his hand stills. He’s entirely ensnared by Youngjae’s gaze, the sharpness of his command.

Youngjae just looks and looks. An eternity passes in the space between.

    excerpts

And isn't that ironic. If Lily didn't lie—if she didn't put up walls and boarded windows up in hopes of keeping her feelings sheltered—then she would've told Haewon the truth in a moment of weakness she would've spent the rest of their contracts, and possibly careers, regretting. The kind of truth that's a punch in the gut and a lopsided neon sign in cubital letters, a voice, screaming: you've ruined me for anyone else, and you don't even know it

    ---

It's grueling work. Sometimes her brain goes haywire, too fast for her to keep up with, and the words run loose, a river overflowing past the green banks of an open summer field. It's all good, as long as it's funny. But Lily knows better than to expect to be afforded the same kind of hilarity were she to say something much more personal, much more real to her.

And somewhere, in all of this: Haewon. Who laughs at her more often than not, and teases her for just about everything. Who stares at her like she's something precious, something worth a smile, and loops their arms together, head in the crook of her shoulder, whenever she slips a little and forgets, if only for a brief moment, that there's a camera crew filming. Who already knows everything, and this Lily has a sinking feeling of; Haewon, who's cruel enough to want to hear it said from her lips.

    ---

If there's any trace of regret that she can taste in the searing of their mouths, she can think about it later. If bile forms after every stutter of their hips, she can think about it later. The questions can come later. Rejection can come later. Forgiveness can come, later—when she whispers a hushed, reverent Haewon against swollen lips, and then a million times over in her brain: HaewonHaewonHaewonHaewon, like a choir gathered in prayer.

    Like atonement.

    my thoughts

Kyungmin's hand on Junghwan’s arm. A light but steady grip around his elbow where it’s hooked over his own face, then pressure like he’s trying to unearth Junghwan from beneath it. Junghwan takes a breath and lets his arm be moved.

Kyungmin says, quiet and almost tender in the low light of his room, “Hyung, you’re acting like more of an idiot than usual. What’s wrong?”

Youngjae just looks at him. Then the mask slips a few centimeters to the side; Junghwan can see a flash of dismal understanding in his eyes. “I’m fine,” he says. “Kyungmin’s waiting for you.”

It’s a clear dismissal. Junghwan goes.

    the nitjae of it all

    ---

Youngjae needed him, and a deeply-buried part of Junghwan had sometimes looked at other guys and thought—could I?—so maybe it could be repurposed, here in his own bed, as something good and kind and perhaps even necessary; Youngjae needed him, so maybe it might not be a sin, or at least not as bad a sin, if he just—

    ---

Should it really be like this? Kyungmin, ruined for anyone else? Junghwan, panting and helpless, taking? It shouldn’t. But it doesn’t matter. It’s happening anyway.

It’s being given to him anyway.

    ---

“Oh my God,” Junghwan mumbles. He hooks an elbow over his eyes. His thoughts about Kyungmin trip and stumble over themselves. It’s clear: this isn’t the behavior of someone who regrets it. Someone who was forced wouldn’t—do that, not willingly. So then—

“You don’t have to be so scared,” Kyungmin says, more quietly. “I know it’s… I mean, I’m scared too. But it’s just me. It’s just you.”

    "Even now?" Junghwan asks.

    "Of course," Kyungmin answers. "Even—always."

    carthasis

    ---

Kyungmin holds his left hand out, palm upturned. “I think it’ll be good, if you could let some of it out. I have room to hold onto it.”

Junghwan looks at the offering. “Do you?” he asks. “Are you sure?”

“For you?” Kyungmin asks back. A slow-growing smile on his sweet face. “Really, hyung?”

beautiful. wonderful. shin junghwan please let yourself want.

Maki needs to prove himself. Nicholas is selfish enough to lend a hand.

    (Approximate) Last Read: 2026/05/21

    excerpts

Nicholas slings an arm over his waist and the glow of the mosquito zapper illuminates the softened edges of his cheek, gentler now after days of late breakfasts in nature and fuck all to do but be themselves far away from the city’s momentum. And the crickets are singing about how life is short and no one is promised tomorrow, so Maki brings a hand to the shadow on Nicholas’s jaw and kisses him long and sweet.

He tastes like barbecue and familiar. His toes are digging into Maki’s ankle and the stubble along his chin is scraping against Maki’s own and Maki wants tonight to still be here when he wakes up.

    ---

Maki doesn’t have it all figured out. He doesn’t know what win he’s still chasing. That’s okay. Nicholas will stick by his side through all of it. He hasn’t lost anything that matters.

seriously one of the best fics i have read in my time of being on this website. the dynamic between maki and nico is just portrayed so well it's making me insane.

[Critics have called it] “like if Jessica Jung’s Shine wasn’t ontologically evil”

    ---

Because Haewon, with her newfound freedom, could go anywhere she wanted and yet has only ever wanted the same exact thing. Because Haewon never could have made any other choice.

    ---

Lily was there, too, of course. Just all the way out in the open. Just on the exact same level as Haewon, and never in the same way.

    ---

Love as a platform, a handshake, a noose.

    ---

You are, said Haewon, in the darkness of the parked van, important to me. Sorry that it took this long to tell you.

Is it weird to say I think I always knew? And, answered Lily, I love you, too.

    ---

Yes, Haewon is making a fool of herself in public, and for free, no less — but it’s worth it just to see the way Lily cracks up. Her laugh, the same as ever, is still the thing Haewon looks for in every joke.

    ---

“No, you know what, Haewon?” Lily throws up her hands. “I love you. I love you! And I’m no fighter, but if someone else was treating you this way I’d do everything in my power not to let them. I’d give up anything and everything but this time — I can’t. There’s no one I can protect you from because,” she says, “it is you.”

Haewon’s chest heaves like she wants to sob, or be sick. “Then why are you still trying?”

“Why wouldn’t I?” Lily asks. “I know you’d do the same for me. I know you already have.”

    my thoughts

this fic man, this fic. you know when you read something, and from the first few sentences you realize that, oh man, this is going to be good? that we me with this fic, and boy, it did not dissapoint. it's at times witty but also painful and lovely and hopeful and throughout it all, beautifully written.

haewon and lily really feel like themselves in this fic, especially in the dialogue. it's like the author took their words straight out of their mouths.

all throughout this fic is just so good i was frothing at the mouth liveblogging it to my dear friend. i also really love the snippets of haewon's in-universe work/reviews of it. i dunno i've always been a sucker for that sort of stuff.

also, the interlude about the railway network, and then the mention of the coastline at the end is just, chef's kiss.

i am truly feeling a lot of emotions but most of all hope and love <3.
