Qifrey obliged, crawling in the space between Olruggio's legs, closing the gap with a kiss. Olruggio could taste himself in Qifrey's mouth the moment their tongues touched, and Qifrey sighed in content, breaking the kiss soon after.
Clearing his throat, he said with a rough voice “When we leave, we are going to your place. I – he added, at Olruggio's raised brow – really can't be bothered with keeping quiet when you will be inside me.”

Qifrey is free of The Curse™, but it leaves him with low vision. He adapts with a little help and some nifty new contraptions from his smart and awesome apprentices. He also finally gets to have good things, like way too much wine and the best friend he's longed after for ages.
Or: I write out my ideal post-canon for my beloved family. I am un-dooming them from the narrative because I'm too impatient for Shirahama to do so herself in 10 years. Characterization/plot leans sweeter and less tragic. I like my imaginative whimsy and queer joy!

There it was, that thing Qifrey did, where he offered a piece of himself wrapped in observation about someone else, like a gift hidden inside a gift, and you had to decide whether to unwrap the second layer or pretend you had only received the first. Olruggio had spent half his life learning to read these offerings and in doing so he had become the foremost scholar of a language spoken by exactly one person in all the world.
"I'm stubborn because someone has to be," he said. "You'd float away on your own mysteries if no one kept you tethered."
"Perhaps." The maddingly sad smile again. "Perhaps that's so."
In which Olruggio brings tea to Qifrey's study on a damp evening and finds him working in the dark again, the staff out and the fire dying.

If Qifrey found out the spell hadn’t worked they’d be back at square one with no contingency plan. As long as Qifrey thinks he’s erasing Olruggio’s memory, then the plan still works as a placebo. While it wasn’t what he planned, and even if Qifrey doesn’t know it, now he doesn’t have to be the only one to bear the brunt of the lies.
OR
An AU where the memory erasure spell at The Tower of Tomes fails, and Olruggio gets to keep his memories unbeknownst to Qifrey.

Once more he observes Olruggio’s features, taking in the color of his eyes — an intriguing shade that reminds him of a star-filled sky — and the harsh line of his mouth. He observes the dark strands that fall across his forehead, the cut of his jawline, the bridge of his nose.
