Rio’s mouth opens to say something, anything— working really hard to not look like a fish out of water— but her wheelbarrow hits a stray rock in Lilia’s yard and she falls headfirst into the pile of literal dirt.

It’s a kind of ritual now- the nights when it’s closer to dawn than sunset, signaling that they’d worked through the night, Valentina sprawls out on the couch in her office while Mel flits around like a hummingbird, taking care of odds and ends.
Valentina watches her young assistant with sharp eyes as she slowly drains whatever liquor of choice is in her glass until she clears her throat. Automatically, Mel stops what she’s doing, shoulders tensing on instinct, and Valentina hides her smirk. Mel turns, folders still in hand as she faces Valentina, and in turn Valentina lets her eyes wander down the length of Mel’s body.
“I think that’s enough for tonight,” Valentina says, voice edging in a command, and Mel nods obediently- sets the folders down on Valentina’s desk, and once her hands are free, they tremble slightly. “Sit.”
