Summary
Only months into his PhD program, Adam Parrish is faced with a challenge he never expected: the loss of his stipend due to cuts in federal funding. But Adam's always been resourceful, and he's always found a way to overcome whatever speed bump or road block is put in his path. So as he leaves the meeting where his advisor broke the bad news, he stops at a bulletin board covered in flyers for research studies. Usually, they don't pay much, but hiding behind a few other flyers, Adam finds a study that might be his saving grace.
It's seeking participants to gain weight on purpose, and it's paying people $250 per pound.
At that rate, it's a no brainer. Even Adam's husband, Ronan, agrees. So Adam signs up, and just like with everything else in his academic life, he goes all in.

But the worst that could happen (other than Adam breaking up with him) would be Adam laughing at him. Ronan had survived worse, and Adam had laughed at him for less. Adam had also never judged Ronan for anything he’d pulled out of his dreams, no matter how puerile or debauched.
Pretty sure they’d found themselves in a laughing at not breaking up with sort of situation, Ronan took another smoker’s breath before he opened his eyes and looked at Adam, still sitting on the bed with the candy perched in his fingertips. Ronan managed to keep the riot in his rib cage out of his voice as he told Adam, “They make you fat.”
“Beg pardon?”
“They make you gain weight.”
After Ronan Lynch encounters a chubby version of his boyfriend in a dream, he wakes up with a room full of dreamt candy that makes whoever eats it gain weight.

But when Adam and Buzz Cut are thrust together on an over-packed train, they finally say hello. Which leads to Buzz Cut — Ronan — asking Adam out. Which leads to their first date that evening. Which leads Adam to an answer for a question he's had for a very long time.

Summary
The worst decision Adam Parrish ever made was moving in with his two best friends for the summer between his freshman and sophomore years of college.
His next worst was accepting an internship on his best friend's — Richard Campbell Gansey III — mother's congressional campaign a week later, and his third worst was falling into bed with his other best friend — Ronan Lynch — the week after that, but without making his top-ranking worst decision, nothing else that summer would have occurred. Or possibly it would have, but moving in with Gansey and Ronan definitely did not help.
When Adam moves into Monmouth Manufacturing with Gansey and Ronan for the summer, it's not just their friendship — and Adam and Ronan's young relationship — that grows.

Summary
All the protein shakes Ronan gave him, all the breakfasts in bed, all the snacks pressed into his hands had filled him back out to where he'd been before. To more than he'd been before; when Adam stepped on the scale in the bathroom, he was a pound heavier than the weight on his driver’s license.
For a few moments, Adam took stock of himself. He felt better than he had when they pulled up at the Barns, healthier and stronger. Two weeks of plenty to eat and drink had wrought near-miraculous change, and when he looked in the mirror over the sink, he looked the way Adam Parrish should, gaunt but not ghastly, lean but not rail thin. Ronan had succeeded in getting Adam back to normal, but that didn't stop Adam from grabbing one last cookies and cream protein drink from the fridge when he went back downstairs.
After avoiding the end of the world, Ronan puts meat back on Adam's bones.

That’s what they were flying towards. A week of good times at an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana. Adam was reluctant to agree to the trip based on price alone, but as soon as the words unlimited food and unlimited room service left Ronan’s mouth, Adam was on board. It also didn't hurt Ronan's case that Adam would get to watch him walk around bare chested and bare bellied for a week while they lazed poolside or on the beach.

Adam usually blamed himself. He needed to be the best, no matter if it took late nights studying to get the best grades, hauling ass to unpack more pallets at work, or longer hours at the garage to fix more cars.
Adam blamed his current situation on Ronan Lynch.
When Ronan notices Adam eyeing up what he's been eating, he bets Adam would never do what Ronan's doing: gaining weight. But Adam's up for that challenge.

Even the things they didn’t align on weren’t make-or-break features.
Ronan wanted a big bathroom with a shower and a bathtub. Adam didn’t quite understand, but he went along with it. It wasn’t something that sent them out of their price range. They weren’t bath people, though; Adam had never seen or heard Ronan take a bath. Ronan never even mentioned taking a bath. But if Ronan wanted a place with a nice bathroom, they’d find a place with a nice bathroom.
When they take the step of moving in together, one of Ronan's requirements is a bathtub. Adam doesn't know why, but it doesn't take him long to find out.
