Like the blood of the strong jawed man that was now pumping through his body. Impulses to clean. Even the untouchable washed up before prayer. Five minutes before Fajr, whispering bismallah to himself in bed, Louis responding that he didn’t know he was Muslim, and he wasn’t, but he’d rub circles into his hands three times before the masses turned to Mecca, like an insatiable tic buried now in his blood. It might have always been buried, actually, and had just experienced unearthing.
