“(I want to have your root.)” you assert with unabashed confidence. This is what makes him blink in bewilderment, for two primary reasons.
Mainly, he hadn’t cottoned on to the fact that you spoke Kryptonian, at all. Your accent is distinctly Terran, but the pronunciation is unmistakable. One might almost say, practiced and recited to perfection.
The second reason is that he has no idea why you would proposition him for vegetables, especially root vegetables at this time of year—farmer’s son, and all that.
It’s only after a long elapsing of a silence drawing tautly weird, for lack of a better word, that Clark realizes he still owes you a response.
