As she returns to stand in front of him, she’s shaking her head gently, and Tim’s never felt more confused in his life. He’s frozen, still down on one knee, the velvet box still outstretched in his trembling grip.
The confusion only grows when he clocks the watery smile adorning her face. He has no idea what’s happening right now.
But then his eyes flick down, and he finds there’s a small velvet box in her hands, too.

“Um. Fuck,” Tim says, swallowing thickly as his eyes dart back and forth between the velvet and her face. “You, uh… I meant that you could have the, uh, the left drawer.”

His eyes lift to hers, sharp and unreadable. “Usually not.”
“Why not?”
He shrugs. “Fewer interruptions.”
“Right.” She gives a small laugh. “You know, I’m starting to think my joke during the interview wasn’t such a joke. Maybe you are a vampire.”
Tim doesn’t laugh.
For a second, she thinks he didn’t hear. But he had; his eyes flicker, quick, like a warning light.
“I mean,” she adds hastily, “you never eat, you never go outside, you don’t like sunlight—it’s kinda a pattern.”
He holds her gaze for a moment longer, then says simply, “Good night, Lucy.”
She feels heat climb up her neck. “Good night.”
