"Here. You take it. I can make do." He offered it, like it was perfectly normal to just give away scarce food.
Nobody just gave things away. Not here. Not now. This thought sparked a weird knot in Till's chest, a conflicting blend of relief (potatoes!) and deep suspicion. His brow furrowed slightly. "Why?" he managed, the single word coming out harsher than he intended.
Ivan's smile, without a single falter, didn't even twitch. "Just being neighborly, I guess," he replied, his eyes actually crinkling at the corners. "And I know how tough it can be to get fresh food these days. Especially if you're not from around here." His gaze knew more than it should, which just made Till want to recoil. "You went to SNU too, didn't you? I saw your bag outside."
He then gestured towards Till's scuffed backpack slung over Till's shoulder, a bright red luggage tag still dangling from a zipper. "And the name tag, of course. Till Lee. Nice to finally put a name to the never-not-annoyed face."

Jeonju's sleepy part of town, with its clinging kimchi smell, felt worlds away from the lively cities and Toronto. The family's move to the old Jeonju house inherited from his Korean grandparents (thanks for the real estate, halmeoni and harabeoji, less thanks for the location) happened despite his father having lived in Toronto since college, making Korea mostly for brief family trips.
As the moving truck shuddered to a stop, a boy with ink-black hair watched Till's family unload, then approached Till with an oddly formal enthusiastic handshake.
"Hi," the boy's voice announced, friendly and loud, like heralding the arrival of a circus. "I'm Ivan."
Till's glance flickered down to the offered hand, then back to Ivan's face, his expression flat, conveying the approximate enthusiasm of someone whose phone battery just died.
"Till," he replied curtly.

It was during one of those rare quiet moments, a stolen hour in his apartment, Till opened a Twitter account on impulse. This wasn't some deliberate move, no grand plan to suddenly connect with people, or express some deep inner self, but more of a reflex.
Choosing the username TillTheEnd, a private joke given the irony that despite the bad coffee and annoyingly self-serving seniors like Luka, and perhaps because of the bright spot that was Mizi, a part of him felt stuck there, Till started scrolling, not expecting much until Ivan's tweets popped up.
The way Till saw it, Ivan's Twitter feed? A strange mix of sad poetry and what Till just had to call emo ramblings, yet this dramatic style, it struck him as kind of funny, especially since he was so down to earth himself.
For a few days, their back-and-forth online continued, Till enjoying being the sensible opposite to Ivan's over the top declarations, until a DM notification popped up on his screen.
