“How are you feeling, honey?” the first nurse says as he pulls the syringe out of the IV. Ashe can’t stop staring at the needle in her arm. She is alive.
“I-” Ashe barely gets the syllable out before she is sent into another coughing fit, her voice raspy as if she hadn’t used it in months, despite her knowing full well that her vocal cords had been in use within the last twenty-four hours. “I-I’m fine,” she manages to get out. “Where’s my dad?”
Ashe wakes up.

A part of him didn't believe he should ever feel better. Atonement for his mistakes could only be done through punishment, punishment he had been sure Dakota was going to give him. He didn't though, and William couldn't even enact the sacrifice he thought he deserved, so he had to atone, then, in other, smaller ways. But William had always been weak.
