In his worst moments, Regulus loathes the fact that Sober James all but ignores him most of the time, only bothering to text him on important holidays or birthdays. That is, until he’s reminded that Drunk James wants to ruin him— completely and thoroughly— by the casual cruelty of speaking his mind and expecting Regulus to go on peacefully with his life as if he didn’t just upend it entirely.

Summary
There's a stack of pictures heavy in his hands. The first one confirms his suspicion. It is of himself entering a gay bar on Old Compton Street. Dread settles deep in his stomach as his father says, “Next one.”
He swallows and places the picture at the back of the pile. The next one is of him at the bar, taken from the corner of the room. A man a few years older than Regulus sits beside him, his hand touching Regulus' upper arm. They're smiling, and Regulus is holding a drink in his hand.
He doesn't wait for his father to instruct him to look at the next one. He's leaving the bar with the same man in the third picture.
They're walking down the streets in the fourth one.
In the fifth, Regulus is pushed up against a wall in an empty alleyway. His hands are underneath the man's shirt, and their lips are connected in a filthy kiss.
Tears start to well up in his eyes, but he continues anyway.
Regulus runs away from home just like his brother did five years ago.

Even now, he doesn’t consider Regulus a mistake. He’s sorry for so much of it, for so many reasons, but not because it was wrong. He’d seen Regulus first as a drowning body in a lake, and then as a boy so clumsy with love but desperate for it all the same, and then as the only thing James wanted to save in his entire life.
His only mistake, maybe, was thinking that everyone who wanted to be loved also wanted to be saved.

Summary
Regulus already knew that this is a game. It’s been one since the beginning, whether James wants to admit it or not. It’s a game, because neither of them can afford it to be anything else, to grow into something real. James seems to like acting dumb about it, but Regulus knows better. Knows to keep his distance and establish some boundaries.

Through the smoke and dark lighting, it’s hard to make the man out, but his looks really don’t matter. This isn’t about what Regulus wants in a partner, it’s about what he needs to survive. At the moment, he’ll take whatever he can get.
Regulus pushes himself off the bar and languidly makes his way over to the other man, eyelids drooping and cheeks flushed, drunk on the smell of arousal alone. Only when he’s close enough to see the man does he truly pause, eyes widening fully and breath hitching in his throat. He thinks his eyes must be playing a trick on him, so he blinks a few times, but the image remains the same.
