Summary
It’s deathly quiet, but if North shuts her eyes and focuses, she can hear the distant thrum of the city, its lights pulsating purple across her eyelids. She raises her chin up to the sky and relaxes her shoulders as she breathes in. Markus says nothing, his hand a gentle, but half hearted weight in her own. When North opens her eyes, he is staring out at the city before them.
There is a question looming over their heads, but neither goes to voice it. They have mutually decided to let it stay, festering in the silence between them. North finds that she can phrase it perfectly as well as never begin to wrap her head around it.
It is one question. But it is a heavy one.
Markus looks at her with a smile. It’s tender, and full of love, but something in the set of his lips is off. She looks at him, and is unable to smile back. She only squeezes his hand, and looks at the Detroit skyline.

Because Connor can see that Markus has a lot of pain. No matter how plush his life was when he lived with Carl, or how gentle and sharp witted he may be, how in control he seems, there is quite obviously something at the back of his mind that he can’t seem to shake. It presents itself in inappropriate pauses mid conversation, or in missed steps and brief flashes of panic. And regardless of whether it is just a feeling or a part of Markus’ programming, it weighs down on Connor to watch him suffer in silence.
Connor just wants Markus to be happy and safe. It’s almost shocking how much he wants that for him.

Steve only wakes up this early because Bucky accidentally kicks him when the alarm clock goes off. He hears a soft ‘sorry’ when Bucky’s lips ghost his cheek. The weight on the bed shifts as Bucky sits up. Steve can see his shadow against the faint light coming through their window, and watches Bucky slowly breathe in, shoulders drawing up to his ears. His arms come up over his head before arching out with his exhale.
He moves a lot like a cat, Steve thinks.

Bradley can’t think. His breathing is ragged and his skin is tight and he wants to scratch it off but he wants Jake to hold him close. He wants to bury himself into Jake’s arms and never leave but Jake won’t fucking touch him.
“Jake,” Bradley’s voice is broken and Jake hushes softly. He’s still not touching Bradley. Jake opens Bradley’s door and walks Bradley into the room.
“Shhh, darling,” Jake whispers. He’s surrounding Bradley again. “I’m here. Tell me your lines.”
“I need you to touch me,” Bradley whispers. His eyes fall shut and his heart slams in his chest. “I need you, Jake.”
