She had a dream where she bought a train ticket back to her parents’ house and watched the scenery roll past her from the seat: the city flattened by motion. The roar of the train as it was sucked into the dark mouth of a tunnel—and then the exhale, watching the darkness lift to reveal the blue sky, strong mountains tall and capped with snow. She imagined it over and over. But she couldn’t imagine getting up, going out. What her parents would say, or what their faces would look like. To do so seemed too trite, bordering on shameful. Filling in those details made it real.
