They smush their cheeks together and grin as the camera goes off the first time. For their second photo, Alex holds up his wand and points at Henry’s crown, eyes wide as Henry looks at him and smirks. On their third, Alex grabs Henry’s jaw and kisses his cheek, making Henry laugh right as the booth flashes. In chapter 5 of the amazing "love thorns all over this rose" @theprinceandagcd wrote:
Henry makes a sad noise, scooting closer to Alex on the porch steps. “I’m so fucking sorry, Alex.”
Alex should push him away. He should try to find what they used to be in the rubble of his family fortress and piece that back together, leaving the rest where it lies. The things that Alex thought they could be are mixed into the wreckage around him, that idea a broken and doomed piece of folklore that will never have the chance to be told.
Another thing he can’t have; another thing he can’t keep.
In the end, that’s what makes him cry.
Henry probably thinks that it’s about his parents or Oliver when tears start to fall from Alex’s eyes, when he pulls Alex close and tries to hold him together as he breaks and breaks and breaks again.

After, Henry rests his cheek on Alex’s shoulder and closes his eyes. Alex is careful to keep his body still, trying to offer Henry a comfortable place to rest. Henry might not be fully asleep when Alex presses a kiss to his head and nuzzles into his hair, but Alex doesn’t know any other way to thank Henry for being everything he needs.
Leaning into Henry’s warmth, Alex imagines what this might feel like if they were something more. With the rumble of a plane engine around them and the world thousands of miles beneath their feet, Alex pictures a different version of himself that could love someone, that could let someone love him, too.

Summary
So while we all knew that the 2020 written in the book would be glorious fiction, we didn’t realize that reality would throw us something to take 2020 even further away from the book’s events. This story is where I attempt to merge our 2020 reality and the fiction of RWRB, using research (a LOT of research) to try to figure out what the trajectory of reality might have been. The story starts picking up the timeline after their late-February trip to Paris. After that, it's strictly AU, but I try to keep a lot of the intents of the events in the book (for instance, Alex's trip to confront Henry in Britain after the lake) while still making them fit the narrative I've created.
Title is from one of the best ever Bowie songs, and the lyrics are so fucking beautiful and perfect for these two.
