“We need to have a serious conversation,” Hyacinth says the second she slides into the passenger seat of the old junker.
Gregory adjusts his mirror for the fifth time, trying to decide whether or not he wants to attempt backing up.
“I’m listening,” he says.
“There’s a Bridgerton curse,” Hyacinth says.
That gets Gregory’s attention.
He puts the car back into park, stops white-knuckling the steering wheel, and faces her.
“Are you… going to elaborate? Or did you want to just say something dramatic?” Gregory asks.
“There’s a Bridgerton curse that activates—”
“ —activates?”
“—the second you turn eighteen, and you’ve turned eighteen, so you’re not going to be able to avoid it.” Hyacinth straightens, giving up on dabbing at the smeared mascara. “I have been training to avoid it, but you haven’t.”

As Ronan slumped his way down the unlit stairs by feel and muscle memory, he wished, just for a moment, that he was back at Monmouth instead. Gansey would be awake too probably, cross-legged on the floor, myopically gluing pieces onto his tiny town. He would've offered Ronan the glue gun. They often sat together in total silence, just like that, for hours at a time on nights like this.
But this wasn't Monmouth. And, when Ronan picked his way through the dark to the living room, it wasn't Gansey he found, but Declan.
