Ryuji has always been a runner at heart. As a toddler, he’d been a fiend, bolting away from his mom the second her attention wandered. It had only grown worse over the years, coming to a screeching halt his freshman year. But it didn’t stop him from racing in other ways. His mind, for example, is always zooming. True, he can’t focus it a lot of the time, but it’s not near as empty as everyone jokes. And in the Metaverse? Nobody can stop him from leaping into battle, for better or for worse. And now? Now his heart is racing.
Not for anything good, mind you. Not for the thrill of defeating a Shadow, not for the accomplishment of winning a race. No, Ryuji is on a train.

He mechanically pulls at his mask, held to his face with thin threads of current. Normally, the mask comes away almost too easily, exploding outward as Captain Kidd surges larger than life.
These are not normal times. His mask doesn't come free even though Ryuji can still feel the captain hovering beneath the surface. "Not now, not now," Ryuji chants under his breath as horror builds. Berith is wheeling his horse around now. Target, acquired. "Kidd, for real!?"
There's no use in fighting, young one. This voice, deeper, vibrates through Ryuji to his core. It isn't the same one as before. We've sailed our last sea.
