    There were worse situations. Mr. William Solace’s circumstances were, objectively, not bad ones. There were far worse fates than a future as the dutiful master of a proud, if aggrieved, house of the English gentry. Worse fates than the imminent necessity of marriage to an eligible, well-bred, accomplished young lady.

    There were people in far more precarious positions: his mother and sister, for two. Some of the men he had known at Oxford and in His Majesty’s forces, perhaps better not thought of now. There was his father’s ward, one Miss Dare, spurned against seemingly everyone’s better interest years ago and now teetering on the line of spinsterhood. There were his brothers, who were dead.
