Thedas is being terrorized by an old, familiar threat: The Resurrection Dragons.
Unlike ordinary dragons, they cannot be killed by mortals. The only people who can kill these 'Castrum Draconis' are Nevarran Lyctor-Saints, led by the Undying King. As the South continues to fight Corypheus, the Undying King has called for another Lyctor Trails, after the last one ended nearly a decade prior with no explanation.
Emmrich Volkarin finds himself chosen as the first 'Commoner' Lyctor-Heir, but instead of Agnes Gallatus becoming his Cavalier, Ishtar Ingellvar is picked for him. Through a small and nearly forgotten ruling, Agnes Gallatus is allowed to accompany Emmrich as he and his new Cavalier undergo the trails.
